anyone gone HiDef DVDs yet?

I'm leanign toward PS3 and built in Blu-Ray. Then I could still play cycle racing games from PS2. Anyone playing HiDef DVDs at home? Any experiences with them pro or con?

My TV only does 720P but that is still much better looking than SD. I hope to get PLANET EARTH on Blu-Ray. Should be SWEEET

PS3 with blu-ray...got and it is SUh-Weeet.

Plus Sony had a big update, hook your PS3 up to the internet and hit the update.

It upscales all your standard DVDs and PS2 games to 1080i...those look darn near Blu-ray like that

In my worthless opinion, I think HD is going to be the "2nd betamax" format because...
1-Sony aint going anywhere
2-the capacity on the Blu-ray is far superior to HD. I read where they said an HD movie juuuussst barely fits on an hd disc. Doesn't leave ya much room for anything or else everything comes with 2 discs.

I read that HD is better than Blue Ray because of formatting issues with blue ray and that the blue ray discs where much easier to damage because the information stored on the disc itself is closer to the surface compared to a HD disc. Plus you have the fact that HD discs and everything about them are being developed by Microsoft so when the high def format war is over who do you think is going to win? Sony or Microsoft? I bought a XBox 360 because you can get the HD DVD player for it for $199. You cant buy a stand alone HD or Blue Ray player for anything close to that. My money is on the HD format...

As much as i would like to play that game... i couldnt base what system to buy on just one game... I dont even have any motorcycle games at all... the last one i bought left a bad taste in my mouth. It was one of the older MotoGP for original XBox... didnt like it at all. Actually i have yet to play a motorcycle game on any system that i liked. I've not played TT though.

I don't have either one. I hear that the Blue ray's are outselling the HD by a large margin.

I have an XBOX360, and I just go to marketplace and download the HD movies that I want to watch!

as an avid trackday rider, and computer game junkie, I find MotoGP to be the most accurate of any of them. TT is cool with all the bikes and sounds but the "feel" is kind of whacked. I never expect games to BE realistic [cuz they are just games] but for the most accurate realism, I reach for MotoGP. For a 14 mile jaunt around Nurburgring Norshclipwhatever on a Busa, I reach for TT. For quality street racing through the countryside, I reach for Suzuki Superbikes. My personal opinion

Godo to know PS3 upscales now. I been watching upscaled DVD for a while and they are VERY GOOD! Not up to HD, but sure look better than SD DVD

Does the PS3 REQUIRE you to purchase that remote just to watch BLURAY, or does it work out of the box? I think there is a version that even comes with that remote

ok i will answer a few question. you can play blu ray movies right out of the box just use the wireless controller. or there is a bluthooth remote for it $24.99. Now blu ray discs have a hard metallic coating so they dont scratch hd dvd does not have this. You can buy the Toshiba hd-dvd player d-2 at costco for $249 till
6-16-07 i'am thinking about but i just dont think its going to win with the lack of sales for the software. Blu ray is outselling hd dvd 3-1 and PLANET EARTH looks good check amazon its $66.99. all so sony has a new player out BDP-S300 its $499.99 came out this week.

any glitches or artifacts watching your BR movies? ? ALL tests at Best Buy look like CRAP with large splotches here and there. I don't know what they are doing wrong, but artifacts like that would be unacceptable even in SD DVD. I'm betting it was a major setup problem being a large omnious chain store and all

Any particular titles look exceptionally good? You know that show off the system?

Do the upscaled SD DVDs look pretty good too? I don't wanna loose that option. My current SAMSUNG does a decent job of upscaling. I am aware of the update to download for the ps3 OS...

Do PS2 games look and play just as good on the PS3? I dont want to sell my PS2 if the 3 can't do the PS2 games justice

The list of movies on BR seems to be larger than HD too. I don't care who wins because next year when super-duper-uber-pooper-vision comes out, all our HD gear will be obsolete again.

ok best buy sucks that very true the lighting in most big box stores makes them look like crap. i would say look out for some of the early releases from sony there not much better then sd dvd and some were really good like underworld. i use these to show off how good blu ray can look Crank,Pirates Of The Caribbean, and open season. after watching the matrix it does look a tad sharper with it upconverting to 1080I. I can play all of my ps1 and ps2 games on it as well it allso can be upted to 1080I if you want. well going by dvdempire its 260blu ray discs to 230hd dvd.

The HDs are just a bit out front with capacity now....by a very small margin (51GB compared to 50GB) in the dual layer sector.
Yet when the triple and quad layers come out as the year goes on....the lead will change hands repeatedly.

Yes BR has sony in their pocket...and that influences lots of media distribution.
However, much cred has to be given the porn industy and their influence with sticking to HD (for now). Like it or not...the adult film industry has the "balls" to to swing it's influence.
They did after all kill betamax.

I can't imagine paying 600.00 for a PS3....damn.
Nor even the 400+ to get the Xbox with HD add-on.

It's still WAY too early.... and although I do favor HD because it was the innovator and grass roots player of this new battle...not to mention as listed above, the user friendly formating allows developers to get creative: i.e the first HD Multichannel Audio discs are coming out and proclaimed to be the first true 3D audio re-productions.
As for security...BOTH formats have already been hacked and the torrents are out there. So there is no winner there.

Personally...just about everything there is one version of..there is also the other....so I will just remain loyal to Toshiba for now....sticking with my 80.00 player that upconverts to my TV's 1080i....it does just fine....and Nothing on TV is so important that I could need to pay today's prices.
When the time comes for DVD to the "low-end" ....then I will go for the Dual Media Player (currently from LG) when the price and time are appropriate.
BTW....this fall, there will be a Chinese built version HD player in the US....look for it around the 250.00+/- price point....and it sounds like Walmart will have a lot to do with it.

A pretty good resource for up-and-coming trends...are places like cdfreaks ... and AVSforums.

... it's just like how 'back in the day' when Universal was the primary studio (only studio) with ac3 audio.

Now... it's all gravy. Ac3,dolby digital, etc.... who cares! All new dvd discs feature dolby digital ex surround (most).

This new hd 'war' will die down in a year and all new discs/players/computers will all be compatible.... so there's no rush! It's all happened before..........

I'll wait til it's time to upgrade properly....

yes...they did!...back in early 2006...and yes the decision to support (mostly)HD was in part due to Sony's slighting of the XXX industry...
but who REALLY wants to see that content in HD? razor burns...blemishes....etc....yikes!

Vivid and Digital Playground are both playing the hi-def game....no matter what their format.

again..too early for me to choose, but if your pockets are deep enuf to do it now............then adopt me!

Porn aside... I bought the PS3 and here is my perspective:

I purchased it so I could play PS2 games upscaled, play old DVDs upscaled, and play Blu-Ray disks. I'm disapointed in the PS2 game video quality. It is not as sharp as the PS2 itself on component and the upscaling doesn't seem to accomplish much, if anything. old DVD playback upscaling is just ok, but not as clean as my old, cheap Samsung with upscaling. The black detail is better and the colors perhaps more vivid - it's the edges, tiny detail, and some general "TV FUZZINESS" that seem a tad off.... like the video has been processed through one more piece of gear for processing. I don't have a Blu-Ray disk yet - coming in mail soon, but I bet those are fantastic. Still, if it can't play PS2 motorcycle games better than a PS2, nor play old DVDs as good as the unit I wanted to replace, it will go back and I will buy a BLURAY Burner. Then I would be able to watch and make HIDEF disks from my HiDef camcorder. Burners are about $500 so I save money in that deal. If my original DVD player and PS2 get an 8 of 10 in Quality, the PS3 replacing them only gets a 7 of 10 on those two aspects to me. I guess it's hard justifying going backwards after you see a certain level of quality, for the price. I was expecting a little more from the PS3

Far as the BD/HD war, I have no clue who will win out, maybe both. Either way, Sony has been in home entertainment gear for ever, and Microslut only recently. BD holds more, so I am supporting that. I plan to only buy titles I don't have, that are HD worthy. I can't see getting old crappy movies on BD where the original movie is no better than a regular DVD
