Doing some research on buying the boy a new gun. At first I was going to go the ar15 route but someone suggested an ak. Now let me tell I have shot one ak in my life and it was a romanian version and I wasnt too impressed with it. Im willing to give the ak another try but I know almost nothing about them. I would like some insight in the pros and cons of both weapons. Now keep in mind this gun will be for the boy to go shooting, maybe some hunting with it. I understand the aftermarket for both weapons are tremendous. Any recommendations would be appreciated

If you are humoring the idea of hunting with it, get the AR platform, there are more options for hunting calibers/etc. If you are looking for fun, reliability, etc, go the AK route. In my opinion get the AR just for the LEGO playtime fun!

Well if the ak can be accurate up to 150 yards....plus ammo is way cheaper

There just isn't as many options for ammo in 7.62 Now the AR you can get a whole different upper.. Let's say the new 300 whisper?

If you go with an Ak I believe firmly Arsenal makes the best.
One of their guns in .223/5.56 would suit him fine as it has less recoil than 7.62x39 and is more accurate.

For your son this gun would be perfect.
Arsenal SA M-5 S 5.56x45 cal : Semi Auto Rifles at GunBroker.com

I had one exactly like it and it would shoot 1-2 inch groups at 100 yards all day long.
Arsenals guns are super high quality.

Arsenal made a 5.56 stamped receiver folding stock model a few years ago. These were very nice as well.
Arsenal SLR-106FR .223 AK 223 : Semi Auto Rifles at GunBroker.com

That is also a superb gun. No it's not a Romak (Romanian Ak) as they were called. Yes they are a bit pricey. But anyone who's ever held, shot or owned an Arsenal Ak will agree.
The main distributor for factory Bulgarian parts made by Arsenal is K-Var Corp. â„¢ . They carry all accessories factory made in Bulgaria. These are high quality parts issued to militaries around the world. I've been to the factory there. What Arsenalinc of USA does is take all new Bulgarian parts and builds an Ak with the minimum amount of USA parts needed to pass batf regs.

Kinda a weird video with the bagpipes but you can see how smooth of a shooter it is.

Between the two platforms Ar to Ak there is no question as to which one I'd want to crawl thru the muck with.
Ar traditionally is more accurate than an Ak but Arsenal makes some pretty good guns.

And do you still have your Hk copy?
I've got those 30rnd mags as well as a bunch of factory Hk made 20rnd aluminum magazines I just found the other day. These are new in individual wrap. Let me know.
Even got some mag pouches.

we just picked up our second ar 15 a stag model 6 with a 24" stainless barrel and in all honesty ive shot both and a ar is ALOT more fun to shoot and you can deck it out anyway you want and make it yours. And if hes into hunting at all its an awesome varmit rifle.

ar10, especially if you intend to hunt with it. 5.56 is marginal at best. i dont know how old your son is, but my 13 year doesn't seem to have much trouble with .308.

An ak will never jam up and can be dropped in mud and still fire unlike an AR that jams a lot when.I have heard guys in the field complain of jamming ARs.Accuracy, definately go with an AR and so many options.

Ive got a Romanian AK and a Bushmaster AR, the AR just got a new upper with optics, and still got the regular upper for makin noise
My thoughts on them/
AR-More accurate, TONS of accesories, its not called the grown mans Barbie for nothin. Lil more pricey, but more ammo options for different applications. As Saiid and that shifty Bots guy said, a new upper can make it a new gun, very modular in that way. Takes less than a minute to change uppers. They are a bit higher maintence, nut nothing bad, they just need a good cleaning and oil after a day out. I always keep a can of spray lube in my shooting box to keep her running well.

Romanian AK- Gives ya that goofy grin all day. Its reliable, but accuracy isnt the best, tho that just plain fun factor is always there. There is tons of surplus Russian ammo around, but it wont win any grouping contests. Decent ammo is a bit more expensive than the 223/556 of the AR, just because it takes more material to make 1 round and isnt as popular( that Ive seen)

Id stick with the AR platform for what your describing as your shooting needs, but if you got with the AK platform, get an Arsenal for sure, it'll keep up with the AR in most ways, if not all.

Can't give much advice outside of: I always had a little trouble with the AK banana-mags. Some are tempermental and don't like to go in and get stuck, others don't.

Weird, all the random mags that I've picked up always locked in nicely, maybe your gun is a lil funky? Just get it sorted before the Zombies come for ya

Some of the Wasr or Romak guns are finicky about mags they like.
Some are built only for single stack specially made Ak mags for ban states also.

A few years ago you could buy Romaks for a deuce at the shows.

AR hands down. Quality, AR hands down. Accuracy AR. Want factor, AR hands down. Different calibers, AR. After market accessories, AR handsdown.

THe AR platform is heads above the AK.
