Finally got the chance to beat up on my busa here.The brakes suck especially the rear and I cant get rid of the off idle dead spot, other than that she runs strong. The problem that worries me is going from 5th to 6th. In Daytona I put around 500 miles on her without missing a shift. I know some of you had mentioned this on your bikes, well today on some nice backroads around my house I had 3 misses in a row and had to stop the bike to get back in gear. I have my shifter pointed down where I like it and I've never missed like that maybe from 1st to 2nd when screwing around but never 5&6. I also use MOBIL 1 motorcyle oil. the bike has 2600 miles on it. Any input would be appreciated.

2600 miles seems a bit long to still be experiencing this problem. My 99 stopped that behavior after Its first service. Maybe one of the professionals on this board can lend a hand. I wish I could help.

Lay off the clutch from 5th to 6th. I'm out of the woods now at 1500. Goes in like butter now.

Ripp on it like a Dirtbike!

If you treat it like a "Wuss", it'll act like one..... :)

When you adjusted the shift lever, make sure it is not hitting the exhaust pipe when you make your shift. For some reason, it seems it take a little more distance of shift from 5th to 6th. That little bottom part where the rod is will hit. This was what my problem was on the 99.

shifter-5th-6th:

1. change clutch fluid;

2. lube shifter;

3. be sure ... with your foot .. "free" shifter between 5th-6th ... it is easy to leave a little foot pressure on the shifter ... this pilot error is a sure way to miss 6th;

4. Frank's comments I would soften ... be deliberate ... shift into gear ... release shifter ... completely ... shift etc

5. it helps to have a ... full pull on the clutch lever ...

6. also disagree on the mileage ... mine has over 10,000 miles on it and it is just know becoming smooooth....

7. in retrospect ... 98 % of all my false neutrals are pilot error ...

8. Suxuki has been using the same shifter since 1986 ... it is a little sloppy;

9. 90 wt gear oil at the shifter ... if you wiggle it you'll see a small space, drop the 90 wt gear oil there where you see the retention clip and again on the engine side;

10. if you want to get eleborate ... remove shifter ... apply grease liberally, reinstall;

good luck ...

shift positive

and yee will not be false neutral

re: Pilot Error

I agree... Since moving from my GSXR1100 to my new Busa.. I have noticed that I ride with the peg in the middle of my boot sole, versus in front of my heel.. What this means is I am shifting with the tip of my foot.. not the center, like where the extra leather is on leather boots....

If I do not make an effort to get my foot in position properly I will have a misshift... If I place my foot correctly it shifts fine and I fly away in 6th!...

Maybe the pegs are more forward than my 1100 and I am just used to bringing my feet back ..not sure... but I am going through the same growing pains as you! Hang in there!

NF try the reverse shift pattern. Takes only 5 minutes to flip your linkage. You'll never miss another upshift again.

Thanks DP I was thinking of trying that but it will probably be another week till I get to ride. This f***ing weather sucks! It cant be much better up there.
I just cant figure out why it didn't do it at all and then 3 in a row it scares me a little with my luck.

Just preload the shifter before you shift. It will go like butter that way, and you'll also feel the engagement the way the others do. It worked for me. Remember, you always have to shift positively, even if you don't feel it's needed.

Thanks for all the replies. I dont use the clutch to shift up after 2nd.The TPS is spot on. I will check that the shifter is not hitting anything like the exhaust and will take Franks advice and ripp on her(although I dont think I was riding her at all like a wuss).I'll just ripp harder. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I use the stock shift pattern. Lowering the shifter 1 1/2 inches to be more ergonomic with my foot helped considerably. Just loosen the two lock nuts on the linkage rod. turn it until fits your foot then tighten. Make sure there is enough threads inside both ends.

If you've seen the problems page you will know that my box has gone completely I had the same grief as you but after adjusting the shifter and 500 mile service it went. The suzuki area rep has seen the remains of my gearbox and is completely baffled hope yours don't go the same way.
