On my last ride thru the mountains of the South Island NZ, we stopped at the Otira Hotel, it was a gorgeous day and the pub has been refurbished in old school fashion!
Here's some pics, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Is it a B&B?
Yes, it is a regular hotel, $108 per night or less for multiple nights, by arrangement.
It's in the middle of the Alps and is an Alpine area at a decent altitude, rains a lot, freezing cold in the winter, but on a sunny summer's day it's magic, as the pics show!
It was built back in the gold mining days in the mid 19th century shortly after Europeans showed up, and was a Staging Post for the horse drawn coaches travelling between the West Coast and Canterbury plains, the East coast. About 120 mile journey.
Google Maps
A lot of gold mining was going on on the West Coast back then, we had our own 'Gold Rush' lol.
When the current owner bought the Hotel about 10 years ago, he also bought every house and dwelling in the town as well for about one million dollars.
The main Railway runs right thru Otira and befor he bought the town, the Hotel was in a very poor state, nothing done for years and years, and not much business done either.
He transformed the place as the pics show, and now it's quite the tourist attraction!

That's a great description and passage of information, much appreciated.

Pretty cool to have knowledge of your history like you do.

Hey, the history of NZ is so short, it's hard NOT to have the knowledge, it takes about 10 minutes to learn it lol!
It's only about 175 years since the first 4 ships sailed here from England with the colonists, looking for a new life in the Sunny Isles of New Zealand.
The poor buggers were fed a lie re the conditions in NZ, they were told it's a tropical paradise in the Pacific Ocean, well it's in the SOUTHERN Pacific Ocean and it certainly ain't tropical ! Going down below zero in the winters, it's actually a temperate climate. Not to mention hoards of warring natives called 'Maori' to deal with on a daily basis.
But it is nice overall, and better than ol' Blighty any day, as the settler's soon found out, a brave new world with all it's challenges and all it's benefits too.
Isolation can be a good thing, if you make the most of it. And these days its a one day plane trip to the rest of the world.

So here is the vid shot as we were leaving the Otira Hotel, and heading back home, the way we came.
You can see the Hotel in the opening scene of the vid, there is also some awesome Alpine scenery to be seen as we left . . .
Enjoy!
