I did as well (wd40), but no luck. The ring would not turn at all.

I think there is a problem with the shock itself. I loosened the lock ring easy enough but the adjustment ring won't not move more than a couple mm. I guess that is why the dealershop hammered the crap out of it and didn't get it to move more than a 1/2 turn
Dealership told me that the collars are not available separately, so they will be getting me a new shock
The service mgr told me he did contact Suzuki and the collars are not available separately. So, if you damage them it will be an expensive fix. Pretty poor engineering in my opinion. The collars should be much thicker and there should be a sleeve between the coil and the adjusting ring.Mine with low miles was the same way, it would barely budge. But that dealer tech may have never adjusted a shock in their life based on them using a hardened tool, which they should not have done. I am guessing a different tech with more skill will be required to install the shock, and likely will not get paid at all due to it being warranty work.
If you ask the dealer perhaps they can clean and adjust the new shock a few revolutions before they put it in, when it is outright easy to do.
One has to wonder: Did they call Suzuki service or did they merely look in the parts catalog?
No, I do not trust these people at all to know their job.
