He did impose some tariffs during his first term but they only raised consumer prices here. After the economy and immigration being the hottest topics of the election, the price of goods will be under a microscope. Given time, tariffs could boost American production, a win win, but it would take quite a bit of time. The last thing Trump needs initially is higher costs to the public, so good relationships with other countries are crucial.
In my opinion all he is doing right now is boasting, and creating waves and unrest......................He wants others on their feet, waiting for him.
This is what he does.................PERIOD.
But sadly he believes that tariffs are good for the American economy. Now, I will agree with him in terms of China, the Pacific Rim and Mexico as it will level the playing field between these manufacturing giants. But Canada is so close in terms of costs, lifestyle, etc, etc it would be equivalent to shooting himself in the foot.
So sit back and let Trump make outlandish claims, yell and scream..........................It's only when he actually acts, that Canada needs to be ready to react.
So while Trump can think Canada is weak, we Canadian citizens aren't stupid. We know that we control the base natural resource that the US needs to operate, which means we control a lot more than he thinks.
If Trump is willing to throw decades of trade contracts out the window, Canada will indeed be swift to react and rip up the very contracts he thinks we shouldn't. Call us names all you want, the only way to deal with a bully is to deal with them swiftly, quickly, and loudly, and publicly.
Remember, we have the heavy crude oil his refineries need (a retrofit will cost billions per refinery), we have the Natural Gas his power plants need to run, and citizens need to heat their homes in this cold winter. ALL of Niagara power generation is done on the Canadian side of the border, and with a flip of a switch a large part of the US is black. We have all the wheat, Soy bean, Corn, and other crops that feed the US factories. We have all the softwood lumber we will ever need to build our houses, businesses, and heat our homes for decades if not centuries to come.
Canada has all the Natural Resources it needs to survive, we are an exporting country..............we can choose to stop exporting at anytime and keep it for ourselves. The US is a Large importing country and relies on imports to survive and maintain it's citizens, you can't stop importing.
At the end of the day the US can think they control negotiations all they want.............................under every pillow in Canada (outside the GTA and Vancouver) there is a gun or a weapon. If the US is stupid enough to think they will invade us again we will have NO PROBLEM burning the white house down for a second time, except we won't stop there this time. So, go ahead - Poke Canada, see how quickly we take your finger right off.
Canadians are pissed off right now to the point of breaking thanks to Trudeau, don't think for a second our built up and pent up anger won't be used towards our neighbours to the south for even thinking they can push us around.
Just my 2 cents
