The cancer was quite extensive and unortunately, they were not able to get all of the safety margins they had hoped for from the surgery. Because of this, she is going to have to have a pretty heavy dosage of radioactive iodine, which in addition to other side effects can cause swelling of any thyroid tissue that the surgery missed. She still has some swelling in her neck from the procedure so the specialist advised waiting another 3 weeks to allow her to heal more completely. At that time, she has to go on an iodine free diet and quit taking her thyroid therapy for 2 weeks. The doc said it is going to be a BAD two weeks with no thyroid hormone and she will be very emotional. Once the two weeks are up, she will have to go to the main hospital for a heavy dose of radioactive iodine and the week after that she will have to go back to see if the if and where the cancer has spread.

The Endocrinologist was fantastic and said it is very curable and she wants to hit it very hard and very aggressively.
During the week between taking the treatment and her scan she cannot be closer than arms length to anyone will need separate dishes and glasses and we cannot sleep in the same bad. I have an army cot that we use for camping so I told her I would set it up in the bedroom and sleep on it so she wouldn't have to be alone at night.

We are both still very optimistic that this will be done by the end of March or early April. The holidays weren't a whole lot of fun this year so we are going to celebrate a Christmas in April and treat outselves to a trip to the bash.

Wow, bro. Keeping you both in my thoughts and in my heart. I'm sure she'll come through with flying colors. Wish I could be there to give you both a big bear hug every day until it's all over.

Stay positive... it'll work out. Trust the docs.
You guys are in my thoughts and prayers.

Praysers out to both of you. She's lucky she has someone like you supporting her through all of this.

Had a friend go through this, but thankfully didn't need the radioactive iodine. She has young kids and couldn't imagine not being able to hold them for that amount of time. Your wife will make it through, but it will take your help to get her there. Thoughts and prayers go out to you.

We are very optimistic. It's not perfect news, but it's good news. We have finished the "mourning" phase and now are looking forward to the positive outcome and getting our life back to normal (or as normal is we can be).
