The kids here in AZ go early and get out early. They are out of school in May and have been back since Aug 8th.
That's the way it is down here in Alabama. Our kids started a week later than yours, Aug. 15th and get out in May but my son is never really out of school. He's in band and they practice all summer. He gets about 2 weeks off for summer.
