cop shoots rider in back

I really hope he gets a full 11 year sentence... Just makes me sick...

The police are there for our protection... We shouldn't have to worry about being shot because of how we turn our head or arm or whatever...

I gotta say it's a crap shoot. Looking at the video it appears the driver is reaching towards his waist at the time of the shots and based upon that the cop would be justified in shooting him. The guy doesn't have to have a gun just give the impression that he does for this to be justified.
The other thing I see is people are making an issue of the length of time he followed him before the stop. It has nothing to do with it in my opinion. There could be many different reasons for him to do that. Waiting for backup, looking for a violation, etc. I don't believe it has a direct effect on the outcome.
I think it's a bad deal all around. The cop has to live with the fact that he shot an unarmed man. The guy has a lifelong injury and he'll probably get a civil award after the criminal trial is over. But in the eyes of the law I think the officer will be exonerated.
Just my .02

Thanks to a jury in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, former police officer Thomas White is facing up to 11 years behind bars: plenty of time to think about the unarmed motorist he paralyzed with an unprovoked bullet more than one year ago.

Though both men pulled over almost immediately, McCloskey apparently did not hear the officer's commands to put his hands up, instead turning slightly to face White while still atop his motorcycle.

Instead of repeating himself, White fired a round into his victim's back...

Hope he gets even more than the 11 years

that cop is real lucky that i ain't that young mans father.

keeerist...here he stops and everything..looked startled as he watched his bud lose control and hop a curve in what looked like an evasive manuveur to keep from getting tagged by the other patrol unit that came flying in from his right side...bad shid...all bad..and definantly a bad shooting.

my middle daughter is going for a degree in criminal justice...she was happy to inform me that in the near future all officers are going to be required to have a degree...or at least be educated enough to know ya don't shoot a man in the back just cause he's startled and turned to look and see.

whadda freaking idiot..and the worst part is i'm seeing a rash of trigger happy cops these days..seems the 1st thing they do is start screaming.."Stop Resisting!"...then then next/last thing ya hear is a loud bang.

All my life i've done my best to maintain a deep respect and high regard for LEO's but it's getting tougher and tougher especially when the bulk of'em these days seem to be morons with guns and badges...and?...lotsa head issues..sad...very sad.

McCloskey did not hear the command "put your hands up" because it was not given. Officer White claimed to have given that command but analysis of the audio on the dash cam clearly proved otherwise. "get down" was the command given. One might ask just how does one "get down" while sitting on a motorcycle, actually the person testifying about the audio analysis stated that that command was not possible to obey while seated on a motorcycle.

Wonder why it took them 6 hrs., have lunch brought in? Well June 21 will be marked on my calendar I want to see what he gets. It is a tragedy all the way around but anyone that thinks this cop should have gotten a walk needs to have their head examined. I have shared this with a couple of friends who are retired LEO's including one from Compton and both came to the same conclusion...this cop should never have been out on the street by himself without a veteran officer (TO) in the car with him.

Exactly one year after Michael McCloskey was shot and paralyzed by an Ottawa Hills police officer during a traffic stop, several hundred of his fellow motorcyclists plan to retrace his fateful ride.

This time, police will escort the bikers.

Area motorcyclists plan to gather at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Omni, 2567 West Bancroft St., and begin the ride through Ottawa Hills about noon. The riders will wind up around 1 p.m. at Ottawa Hills Village Hall, 2521 Richards Rd., where a rally is planned in support of public safety - for everyone.

"We want to send a message to Ottawa Hills that citizens in this community will stand up for what they believe in, they will show support for people who need it, that they support Mike," said Kaytie Johnson, one of the organizers. "We want to take a stand against excessive force, take a stand against profiling in Ottawa Hills."

Ms. Johnson said organizers have been working with village officials on the event, which is expected to draw more than 400 motorcyclists.

"We're showing Ottawa Hills in numbers of bodies standing on their front lawn that collectively we're against excessive force," she said. "We do not want this to happen again."

About 2 a.m. on May 23, 2009, Mr. McCloskey, now 25, and his friend, Aaron Snyder, had just left the Omni on their motorcycles and were riding down Indian Road when an Ottawa Hills police officer pulled them over. The officer subsequently shot Mr. McCloskey once in the back while the rider was still sitting on his bike.

At a jury trial in Lucas County Common Pleas Court last week, the officer, Thomas White, 27, contended he fired once at Mr. McCloskey because he believed the motorcyclist was reaching for a weapon and that his life was in danger.

The jury deliberated more than six hours before returning a guilty verdict against White on a charge of felonious assault with a firearms specification.

Although the incident caused anger and outrage, Ms. Johnson said Sunday's ride and rally are not intended to be confrontational but "a peaceful outlet."

Ottawa Hills Police Chief Robert Overmeyer is hoping so. He said the village is bringing in officers on overtime to block off intersections and make sure the motorcyclists have safe road conditions. The village is picking up the tab for portable toilets at the rally site, he said.

"I want to show we're having cooperation, that we're being hospitable," Chief Overmeyer said, adding that he hoped his officers would not be heckled in return.

"They're within their legal right to have a rally, but we're not going to provide any comment or anybody to be yelled out," he said.

Marc Thompson, Ottawa Hills village manager, sent a letter to village residents Wednesday informing them of the rally, outlining the route, and asking them not to leave cars parked on streets along the route.

"The Village Manager and the Ottawa Hills Police Department have been working with the organizers and will be providing a police escort for the riders," Mr. Thompson said in the letter. "… If you are on the road, please be mindful of this event and the safety of the motorcyclists."

I live near Toledo and my wife works in Toledo. (Ottawa Hills is suburb).
I watched the video and the cop (Part timer on police force), turns his siren on AFTER they blast off
from the stop sign. The guy that got shot LIVES in Ottawa Hills. I would venture to say after
living around here for so long that the two guys were giving the cop the motorcycle "raspberries"
by taking off fast. I would also venture to say the part time cop was poorly trained and made
a bad decision. I am guessing there's more to this story than we are seeing.!!

GOOD, I hope White goes to prison for a long, long time, maby by the time he get out his azz will be soo sore from getting it up there, he will think twice before he will ever pull something like that again:thumbsup:

from what i can tell he didnt say put your hands up untill after he shot and paralized the man, and he was on the ground...anytime you turn your body while sitting your arm will follow--- it is after all attached to your shoulder :poke: maybe if the guy turned to the left instead of the right he would still be able to walk??? either way they are not allowed to shot untill they actually see a gun....U MUST SEE THE GUN FIRST:rulez: not just think he may have one

scary thing is how stiff the man became after getting shot..he looked like a board as he fell over...the cop is prob lucky he didnt die

I disagree DJSin I don't think there is anything written saying that they need to actually see the weapon before shooting. Don't misunderstand me though I agree with jury decision hope he gets the full sentence available. You just can't leave your siren blasting in the guys ear an fire cause he doesn't do what u want.

You can "what if" until the end of time. This is what I think of "what if" If frogs had wings, they would not bump their butts a hoppin. This was a bad shoot.
Jailing the officer will not help. You have to get past the anger and use your head to determine what led to this and make sure it does not happen again. Good luck, there will always be "bad" shootings. It is the nature of the business and the climate of the world we live in. Officers will lose gun fights, win gun fights and shoot people they should not have. Innocent people will be shot accidentally. I am sure the officer involved would do anything to take that one bullet back.

He should be fired, and never allowed to carry a firearm again. The victim should be awarded enough money to keep him comfortable the rest of his life. (millions)
The department needs to overhaul their firearms training. Intense - shoot - no shoot training should be implemented.
There are problems occurring in this country with firearms training. Budgets are being cut, officers are being let go. There is very little money left to buy ammo for training. There is a shortage of ammo, nationwide due to the wars.

Here is my rant...........
This type of widespread negative publicity erodes the publics confidence in law enforcement. Funding drops when this happens and finding quality persons to enter a career in LE drops drastically. Ask yourself, do you want to enter a career which is no longer respected and every act on video is broadcast on the INTERNET for the entire world to view -FOREVER!.
It is very easy to judge someone when you are not standing in their shoes, sitting behind a monitor in the comfort of your home does not equal standing on the side of the road late at night with the mindset drilled into you from day one that everyone can kill you if you screw up. Trust me if you don't have the mindset every traffic stop could be your last one.... you will not survive. It is a fine line trying to make split second decisions which are most times life and death.
Give the officers out there a break. It is not such a good career choice any more.
Most people have trouble deciding what to EAT for lunch. Officers have to decide IN SPLIT SECONDS weather to shoot or not shoot.

Sorry for the rant....

UncleSteve well put.
And you are correct only the bad episodes get plastered all over everywhere forever.
2 officers died the other day and many more have passed since.
The 2 that died the other day are now just a byline ticker on bottom of screen while things like this get shown daily and daily to Ad Nauseum.
Same as when a homeowner uses a gun to protect himself. You will never hear it and they wont get credit but find a thug with an Ak and hes all over for a long time on the TV.
This cop and bad guys with guns gives all good hearted folks a bad name and bad rep.
Thank you for your service and choice of what is now a most underappreciated job.
Be careful out there...

Nobody here has generalized all LEO behavior as being negative.

The only thing being said over and over here is that this ignorant cop shot an innocent man in the back for NO legit reason. Traffic violation and now paralyzed for the rest of his life.

Sentencing the officer to 11yrs won't fix anything but neither will the couple million dollars... the guy is paralyzed now... I wouldn't make that trade for money.

Who said trade? That is not an option, the damage is done.

Damage is done and my point is guilty party should pay. In this case the officer.

You mentioned pay victim money to make him comfortable for the rest of his life ... ??

Not good enough IMO is what I meant there ... officer needs to pay for his wrong doings just like everyone else would have to...

I live in Toledo and have been following this from day 1. Part time cop made bad choice, lives forever changed on both sides. Truly a sad day for all. Young part time cop has to live with and pay for his actions. The other young man stuck in a wheelchair for life, so sad. I have sympathy for both because both lives are forever changed. Careers ruined, physical and emotional turmoil for both for years to come. Nothing good came out of this for either man. I feel only sadness for both families and victims of this violence. And yes, both are victims no matter how you feel about what happened. Both are paying for there actions and inactions, deserved or not. It's just very sad.

Guy
