Hint...there is one other tool besides the tape measure you can use, and it's units are in degrees.

Q1: 22/7 is a good approximation, but only to a couple of decimals, so it's generally easier to just memorize about 5 decimal points. Anything more than that usually has no effect on the answer you calculator will give you. I seem to recall that there's also a conversion based in radii... but I can't remember it at the moment.

Q2: You underestimate my hubby. I'm pretty sure he know's the pythagorean theorem. Measure the approximate angle of the sun above the horizon and measure the distance of the shadow. Then multiply the tangent of the angle by the measure of the shadow... the result should be the height of your chimney. As a shortcut... watch your morning news and find out what time sunrise is. Find the time that is halfway between sunrise and noon (or equivalently halfway between noon and sunset). At this point in time, you should have about a 45 degree angle, allowing for the time of year and assuming you aren't in antarctica or northern Canada, so the length of the chimney's shadow should be pretty close to the actual height. Close enough for government work, at least.

On Q2, I was actually just looking for the use of the Tangent equation. If you measured out from the base of the chimeny to a point some distance away, this would be the "Adjacent" side, and then using the protractor to measure the acute angle to the tip of the chimeny (Theta), you now have two out of the three variable in the equation. Now you just solve for the unknown variable, which is the "Opposite" side, and also the chimeny height.

It's cool to know/learn about using the sunrise/noon measurement approach. I hadn't thought of that method.

Note: My daughter is currently going through this stuff in her High School class, so it was fresh in my mind. I'm more of a Physics nut than math, but they work together so I don't mind.

I need some masonry work done on my chimney? I pick up the phone, and I call a Gen. Contractor friend of mine, explain what I need done, Kurt in turn calls the Mason and he comes out with the right tools and years of experiance to handle the job and we get it done. Simple.

So if I need to know the height? I say "Dude, so how tall is that bad boy anyway? Then I write him a check and we're good to go... Problem solved.
