So my procrastination of changing oil and cleaning up the old girl before she got put away for winter has come back and bite me.

I decided (since insulating and getting some temporary heat in my garage) to do the actual maintenance on all my bikes.

So I pull the plug out of the oil pan and found a tiny piece of metal. I couldn't identify what it was until all the oil had drained. I thought it may be a rod bearing or something.

Well after all the oil was drained I found this.......

well I know exactly what that little piece of metal was. Took all the threads out of my oil pan. I think I may have overtighted the plug at one point in the past and this time it decided that it would have no more.

Luckily, about 3 years ago I thought my oil pan had a crack in it. I ended up snagging a used one super cheap!! so 20 min later I'm back in business with a new pan (new to me anyway) and good threads!

I can verify that they are absolutely the aluminum threads to the oil pan...I wish I could say that I had no clue. New oil pan cost me 150 and change...very very expensive mistake....which also involved removing the muffler to get to all of the bolts. The second thing I can add to this post...change the oil pickup device inside the oil compartment. It has a metal screen that is enclosed in plastic pickup tube...replace it while the pan is off...don't forget to get new crush washers for your steel oil plug and a new gasket for the oil pan...2hip

Just curious:
Is it that easy to strip or are you too strong ?
No offense meant by that, just wondering if it is that much of a POS or you think you tightened it a bit too much ?
Or is this just the result of many oil changes and there is nothing you can do to prevent the inevitable ?
Concerned about mine in the future as I change my own as well.

I honestly think the torque rating for the plug in the service manual is waaaay to tight. I've changed the oil probably 15 times. I think I overtightened it once a couple oil changes ago because I remember thinking I felt the plug slip a little and I cringed thinking I just took them out so I quit tightening.

I've changed it atleast once or twice since that happened and I've been ultra careful since then. Nothing I could have done on this one because it happened when I took the plug out and not when I put it in.

My suggestion would be to tighten the plug nice and snug and not use the torque rating in the manual.

I want to get me one of those oil pan bolts with a magnet in it. Can anyone point me to where I can get one? Seems like cheap piece of insurance.

Why does the oil pickup need to be replaced?

I have 21 oil changes on my bike in 62,000 miles. ALWAYS use a torque wrench and replace the crush washer on EVERY oil change. If you do, these kinds of things won't be as likely.

Why does the oil pickup need to be replaced?

The pickup can get clogged over time and if it does, you'll starve the upper part of your engine with predictably tragic results.

Some recommend you do it every year but I haven't ever done it on mine, although I'm sweating it. Next available cold weekend, I'm thinking.
