The bike is totalled. I just got the call from my insurance agent.

Does anyone have experience with insurance companies? I really need some tips on how to NOT GET SCREWED. This is my first two-vehicle accident in 13 years of driving.

Tell them EVERYTHING that you've done to the bike that was money out of your pocket. Tires, mods, new anything, etc. If they're good, they'll take excellent care of you. I got over 2000$ more for my old bike than I payed for it, just due to elaborating (that's elaborating, not embellishing!) on what I put into it.

Sorry to hear about your bike man, it sucks ass to have that happen.
But, very happy to hear that you walked away almost unscathed!

Were you in full gear?

Provide receipts for anything you have done to customize your bike. If you live in a helmet required state they will have to replace your lid also. Be honest, and thorough.

The helmet has some deep gouges, but didn't crack or fall apart (even the screen stayed on). The jacket has some small holes (back - around the armor, elbows - same) but the seams held up well. That said, I have no injuries to my head, neck, back or elbows - all the places that had padding and/or armor.

Oops, forgot the brands - HJC AC-12 Carbon helmet and Fieldsheer jacket, obviously. Both were superb, IMO.

Here's the start of the back wheel being locked. As you can see, I only had about 10 feet before the intersection - or a little over 1/100th of a second - before hitting the van. The bike did not go down first. It was a "head on" hit for the bike into the side of the van. That means that I was still doing about 40mph at impact.

And here's the median that I rolled myself on to wait for the ambulance.

Those are my oil & gas stains on the street and that's an itty-bitty piece of my bike on the median.

I can't believe that's the only road rash you got as a result of a crash that left your bike looking like it did. When I commute to work, I wear jacket/boots/gloves/helmet, but not protective pants. I'm just lazy enough to not buy and wear protective overpants. I don't think my Dockers will do a very good job protecting me if I end up in your situation. Maybe I should re-think this.

That was such a beautiful helmet. That carbon fiber looks awesome. You have to get a new one though. You are not supposed to wear a previously wrecked helmet. They lose their structural integrity when you go down. I know it's an illusion, but your helmet looks barely big enough to fit a softball inside from that picture.

thanks for posting up the pics

I know some folks, myself included were curious how those CF helmets would really hold up in a wreck. were the pants zip around and you didnt have them zipped or how did you wind up with the rash on the hip? Otherwise, looks like you were VERY lucky and for that I'm super happy for ya :beerchug: Dont do it again ok :cheerleader:

And beaquel, you can get some good zip over pants, mesh or solid for under $100 from New Enough Motorcycle Apparel sells motorcycle jackets, pants and suits, boots, gloves, helmets, etc :: New Enough, LTD which will save your hide (as you can see here) should you ever need them.

Good advice for those that didn't know. The only reason that I haven't destroyed this one is because the insurance company will want to destroy it themselves if they pay me for it.

how did you wind up with the rash on the hip?

I was only wearing slacks. If you chuck a 220lb side of beef down the road at 40mph wrapped only in cotton, it's not going to fare well.

I said that to a co-worker yesterday and he chuckled all afternoon. The visual is great.

And before you ask, NO, THAT WILL NOT BUFF OUT![/QUOTE]

Yeah, I think you're right. You're gonna need some duct tape first.

And three cheers for gear!
