Shifter Sticking up and down on shifters

When I shift my shifter will either stick up or down depending on the shift. I have to tap it up or down with my toe to shift in the same direction. Any ideas to what is might be. I checked the shifter adjustment and everything is ok. Seems to be something internal that is making it catch.

Have you tried cleaning and lubing up the shifter pivot point? Also might want to check that the stud the shifter mounts to is tight as mine has come loose!

Do I have to take the water pump off to get to the internals of the shifter stud?

After the pain of removing the gear shifter cover I found out the return spring was broke. All of that for a $2.50 part. Oh well I quess it could have been worse.
