Eddie seemed very cool, very laid back, but he smoked liked a chimney.Rare to see video of him without a smoke in his mouth. Guessing thats what did him in. Shame. Great guitarist. I think everybody back in the day had at least 2 or 3 VH` albums, Volume 1 for sure. I have to admit,I liked Van Hagar better.
See ya on the other side Eddie...save a spot near the ashtray for me...

Sad to hear. RIP. Interesting that he attributed his cancer to the metal pick that he continually put in his mouth.
Yes, it's sad when people commit slow suicide by smoking, I've always noticed that the majority of smokers are so addicted that they are in denial that the chemicals and tar is the cause of the cancer . . now THAT is sad . . .
anyway, he was an awesome guitarist and a real showman to boot . . RIP EVH.

Could have been that I 'spose...but I'm guessing all the smoking played a part too. He prolly started young.......

How about all the amalgam fillings in our teeth with mercury vapor constantly leaching into our throat, lungs, and blood stream?
I wonder if that causes cancer too?
Damn the dentists for that poison they put into our bodies!

We can say this and that but you know the saying when your time is up its up Personally I am not a smoker nor a alcohol drinker but my father has been smoking a shocking 70 plus years now and he is still alive and relatively in good condition for a 84 year old man Then again you read about seemingly perfectly healthy young people dying everyday just does not make sense Take care my friends

Many here remind me of Eddie Van Halen. He took something that did not work for him and fearlessly tinkered with it until it did exactly what he wanted, just like members here do with their bikes.

One of the coolest things Van Halen did is related to tuning. Imagine the tuning peg of a guitar. Turn the peg to tighten the string and the string winds around the stalk. An inadvertent effect of this action is that it exerts a rotational stress on the string. That destabilizes the string and has a detrimental effect on the tuning. He figured this out and at the opposite end, at the bridge, he rotated the string in the direction that relieves the strain created at the tuning end. This technique allowed him to use a standard tremelo, aggressively attack the strings, but still maintain excellent tuning.

Here is a guy installing Eddie's patented de-tuning device to see if it works on a 7-string guitar (it does!). That is pretty impressive to completely change the tuning of a guitar and require only minor tuning afterwards. This demonstrates Eddie's solid knowledge about the instrument:

Eddie's Patented De-Tuning Device

If Eddie did the same tinkering on Hayabusas he would have solved the hot-start issues a long time ago.

Man...you know a lot about just about everything. You should consider writing a book or 2. :D

My oldest son called my wife and asked if I was okay yesterday, my wife said yeah why? She was thinking that maybe I didn't respond to a text or something. He said mom Eddie Van Halen died.... He knew Van Halen was one of my favorite groups in the 80's. I raised both of my boys to listen and play metal jams from the 80's on guitar.

I still remember when my oldest was in high school he would come home and practice all night long..... One night we were trying to watch TV and he was in his room with Van Halen up loud, I had enough and stomped down the hall while hearing eruption... I turned the corner and realized it was my son finger tapping out the music on his Stratocaster... I ran back to the living room and drug my wife back to his room and we were both peeking in his room when he finished... He looked up and realized we were there, his mom reached out to high 5 him and I was wiping tears away... Man it was a good day in our house to realize he was playing at that level.

Eddie was definitely a great guitar player... If you didn't know it he and his brother actually started out on the opposite instruments. Eddie was a drummer :)
