New York City outdoor smoking ban begins - CNN

I know it's not the first and certainly won't be the last but it is silly to not be able to smoke outside 100 feet away from someone cause the second hand smoke may harm them isn't it? I can understand planes, taxis and restaurants by c'mon isn't this going a bit too far?

Silly, why not just ban the products that are illegal to use.

can't smoke on beaches in cali. i'm glad they're doing this. i get tired of picking up cigarette butts from ****bag sergeants who don't put their cigs in the butt can when it's 2 feet away.

I think one of Sydney's local Councils has done something like that.

*Googles*

Yep, here we go: Waverley council smoking ban

"Waverley Council has voted to ban smoking in outdoor cafes and restaurants from July. It also voted on Tuesday to ban smoking within 10 metres of playgrounds, parks and reserves."

Councils can ban smoking in public areas such as footpaths, beaches and parks.

I don't know how they expect to enforce it, though. - If some twit dressed like a meter maid tried to fine me, I'd tell them to GFY and then walk away.

eh, ever been to NYC? Imagine if you will, 100-200 people standing outside of a bar/eatery all smoking... doesn't matter that its outside, you might as well smoke one yourself from the second hand smoke. I don't think this is aimed directly at the one or two individuals but more of a way to prevent masses from smoking it up outside of businesses. I am all for it, I'm not a smoker but think its a step in the right direction.

No offense to smokers...

Granted this does sound a bit crazy, but I dont live there so I can know if it is truly a problem. All most of us can do is speculate.

I 100% agree with a smoking ban on all beaches. Not all, but some to half of smokers are negligent with their butts and just throw them wherever which nasties up the popular smoking areas. Its disgusting. I was extremely happy with the smoking ban in restaurants too. It's not even a health concern for me. It's an annoyance because I hate cigarette smoke and the stale smell it leaves behind. I do not think we should strip smokers of all their rights... As far as their right to smoke goes... Thats an iffy topic to tread on. I am not one for taking away their right to smoke, but I am for my right not to be annoyed by the smoke and it's affects.

That is just silly. I don't smoke and never have but I can walk away from it if it gets that bad. Quite a few pool rooms across the country went out of business when the passed the smoking law. I agree not to smoke where there is food being served but here they build no smoking rooms. To me the rights of people have to come into play at some point and time over this.

I think BBQ grills should be made illegal, the smell of charcoal and negative health effects are terrible. I shouldn't be subjected to that in my neighborhood i mean i do live here so it does effect me..... chip chip chip chip Alcohol also i hate the smell when i walk by a bar in downtown and the people drinking it are constantly running over people and driving up insurance rates.. negative health and bad for my wallet and i don't like the smell.. chip chip chip. Oh wait Transfats are bad for peoples health and the smell annoys me, lets make it illegal.. oh wait they did in NY you don't have the right to eat transfats

I do understand why people are annoyed, but i just believe that to tell people they can't do something outside is reaching. Or telling a man/woman who spent their hard earned money to open a bar and grill that they aren't allowed to choose if smokers can smoke in their establishment that they payed for.

The very legislature that came up with this will most likely follow along right behind the left coast California and make it legal to smoke Marijuana in public if you have your BS doctor's excuse for some made up illness.

You all forget that our elected officials (Republican and Democrat) know more about how to protect us from our dumb selves than we do. If you dont belive me than just ask any one of them. They will have no problem explaining to you how your lack of education and intellect prevents you from making the proper choices that will have a positive outcome on your submissive existence.

It all makes me sick to my stomach.

Yes I have. Lived in stamford ct for four years and rode the train into the city almost every weekend. I can understand your point of view.
So don't allow smoking within a hundred feet of a places entrace or something?
To say 'no smoking in times square due to second hand smoke' is silly to me.
Say it's to prevent trash buildup I'm fine. Florida beaches are full of butts from folks from NY and all other places who have no respect for mother nature. Nobody gets more upset at butts all over than I but I still dont agree with dangersous second hand smoke outdoors.

Disclaimer , the term NY was used as an example and not to single anyone out.

Good post. There are 7 billion people on this planet and growing, tolerance is a virtue.

How about converting scuba gear to contain smoke, toxins and pollution for those who enjoy this.

If they would actually enforce the current NYS law, 50ft from the entrance, they wouldn't need this one. I hate trying to walk into a store or restaurant through a cloud. Gross....

What a waste of time... It's not enforceable. As for the whole "second hand smoke" study  I'm still looking to see that study

I have no problem with it being banned in federal buildings. The rest should be left to the owner of the business to decide. Out side... give me a break.

Whose blowing smoke up who's azz.
