Jonn- I'll have to post a street map up. Yes, pretty deserted. The trick is this is a one-way loop and these pics were shot on a Friday morning. Typically, on weekends, this is a favorite of bicylists that'll bike across the Golden Gate, then do this loop, ntm all the tourists. Sausalito is on the other side of Hwy 101 btw from this.
And yeah, the speed limit is ridiculously low, but if you noticed how narrow the road is, that's pretty much why, plus all the historical stuff about the Shoreline Defenses and all the gun emplacements everywhere has people stopping and parking on the edge of the road. It's all open to the public so you can freely roam about. Also the mountain biking here is superb.
You can can get a hint of that if you look at the terrain- no trees, just grassy hills overlooking the ocean.
'Nother interesting thing is out by the lighthouse, there are boat launching ramps into the ocean that date back a 100 years or so. These are where the life boats were launched when a ship coming into San Francisco Bay would capsize in the rough water, or run into something in the thick fog, the cliffs of the shore and such.
And Cam- it looks like that pretty much year round.
Super green- I mean brilliant glowing - in the spring time.
