You need access the two allen screws on the left and right hand size to let that cover lift up. Takeoff the inner panels and that should give you access.
Then remove the 10 mm head bolts at the top of the front of the tank, and lift the tank straight up. The tank cover and the tank come up as one unit.
Sorry, I read that the way I posted it and it sounded stupid. You're not taking off just the cover, you're lifting the tank and the cover up. Those two side Allen heads have to come off.

Undo and remove the little allen bolts as Spud said, but to lift the tank, tip the bike upside down and the tank will fall straight down, much easier and you don't need a prop stand either. . . . but be sure to remove the engine oil and fuel first, it can be quite a messy job!

Instead of lifting the tank he can just lower the bike while holding it.

gen1 - all shown pdf´s
gen2 - the one pdf which is offered
and 4 the future :
when ever you post about your busa mention what gen it is (1, 2 or 3)
AND
at gen1 add what year of connstruction it is - gen1s differ a bit in technical details over the years ´99 - ´07

No u need not to do so simply screw the tank up and fix up your cables
