this is what is happening now

A disabled veteran in Canada has slammed her government for offering to euthanize her when she grew frustrated at delays in having a wheelchair lift installed in her home.

Retired Army Corporal Christine Gauthier, a former Paralympian, testified in Parliament on Thursday that a Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) caseworker made the assisted suicide offer.

After years of frustrating delays in getting the home lift, Gauthier says the caseworker told her: 'Madam, if you are really so desperate, we can give you medical assistance in dying now.'

The worker who made the offer hasn't been named, but they are feared to have offered three other veterans who contacted VAC with problems the same 'solution', Global News reported. "

I've never heard of this being offered to any veterans I know...obviously it must be a thing. I know there are huge, huge hoops to jump through before this euthanize option becomes a reality-they don't just show up to your house one morning with a firing squad.

I wonder how sensationalized beyond reality this has become.

I always hear complaints about our Veterans Assistance but no other organization offers such a thing....when a steel worker who has toiled for years breaking him/herself up, there isn't an organization out there to do what the VAC does for veterans-many of whom never left the country.

I personally have had very good dealings with VAC.

I transport vets. If they are 100% rated, they are expensive for the VA. They get placed on endless holds, waits, delays, documentation. It's rough to watch.

By far the most disgusting act by our government, I find it crazy we don't see massive protests over this! This is one thing we should be protesting, veterans deserve better from all of us.
In America. The idea of a being a veteran and caring for them is not looked upon with much desire to support them. We have a torrent of issues that 20 years of war brought. The government doesn't like to honor their end of the agreement now.

3% of all Canadian deaths were due to euthanasia

i would be concerned for those with mental illness
From all I've read, anyone who's sole issue is mental health issues are not eligible for MAID as of now but that is supposed to change March 2023...people have to request MAID and there is a lengthy, in depth process to enact it with a legal process.

"Angrycops" on youtube did a video not too long ago about a Canadian vet, who was offered a way out...
The only reason this is even getting any press is the word "vet" there are many others who choose this path on their own avail and not a word is said....

Like anything, it's got over sensationalized by capitalizing on veterans.....who I might add can say no and nobody is going to strap them to a table and euthanize them. I grow weary of all these people including vets seeking to be a victim to garner some sort of sympathy.

Bee it's a part of culture now. Victim culture. Entitlement culture. Lack of Accountability culture.

In addition to transporting vets, I'm also in the VA healthcare system. It isn't perfect. None are. I for one am grateful for it. I go to my appts. Almost always in a group of 10 people, 4 will be grumbling about how they are being treated poorly by the system. I get into chats with them sometimes. I try and find the opportunity to say, "Have you ever thought about going and finding a system you like better?". They never want to do that option.

They have earned this benefit. However they earned it, it's theirs. But people need to get a grip. They do work for you. But they are not your valet provider. The VA isn't perfect. But I see all of the providers out there. The VA does better than a lot of other options.

People need to learn the word gratitude. Yes it's your right. Be gracious about it! They might figure out how to take it away.

if i had terminal cancer and i would be in pain - and the person has own conscience then its fine

a disabled person is glibly offered euthanasia for wanting a wheel chair ramp is NOT the same

your defending the undefendable - just my opinion

There is a huge issue with veterans (and almost veterans) abusing the system, a few years ago we had a female who after not completing basic training ended up with a PTSD claim against the military....she was awarded a payout.

Not long ago a serving member told me the military put out a blanket claim for serving soldiers to be awarded a monetary sum if they felt they had ever been abused mentally while serving, they received an additional $5 if they identified as homosexual (which of course lots of them did as it is unable to be proven). Most of these people wouldn't have even survived basic training when I joined.

You are entitled to that opinion.

I question the entire situation the media is depicting....I know several disabled veterans who have received wheelchair ramps and were never told they should be euthanized. These same veterans have had in-home evaluations where specialists came into their home and assisted in streamlining their amenities to help them in their day to day lives.

I call it as I see it, a person shouting they are a victim and are seeking some sort of either monetary gain or sympathy.

As a long serving veteran who has used our Veterans Affairs program, I am more than happy with the services I have received and as a mental health sufferer who has had 4 years of therapy, I have never even once been asked about MAID nor have I ever heard of any other veteran who has other than these depicted on media.

Gee Bee. Now you will be accused of gay bashing. You aren't allowed to suggest that gays are being treated special in this thread.
No bashing of homosexuals, just the opposite actually...people who are profiting from self-profiling on a government form (which had a check box for this self-identification)

Oh Lord. If basic caused her PTSD, it's best we did pay to get rid of her. I mean it's pathetic they caved and paid, but JHC now PTSD is being prostituted.

Same here. But you know how it goes. You bring up a topic and you have to fit a narrative they need you to be.

Not sure why anyone gay should be paid differently. But we have a culture to adhere to now.
The payout was something like $15K with an additional $5K if you identified as LGBTQ.

I called it "hush money" as now the government can say they awarded a cash settlement to military members who felt offended or intimidated....

Heaven help these people in a battlefield environment....many of the "older" soldiers still serving that I talk to say they certainly wouldn't want to go to war with any of their subordinates.

It brings us around to the original post in this thread.....we can only take so much at face value to know what the reality is.....

I'd sure like to have heard the conversation between the VAC person and this person asking for a wheelchair ramp.

Person "I need a wheelchair ramp, what can be done to help?"
VAC "why would you want one, when you can opt to be euthanized instead..."

I'm sure it went just like that too....I've never, ever heard of such an offer given to anyone I've ever talked to including a double amputee who had no problem getting a wheelchair ramp made.
