How hard is an engine rebuild?

So got a pretty good deal on an 05 that appears to have thrown #2 rod ( judging by the holes in the crankcase). I got for the parts. But then got to thinking about the motor. In general, what usually goes into a rebuild like this? Ive never torn into bike motors, might be fun. Obviously I'd be looking at replacing the crank, case and rods and bearings. Do the heads usually make it through okay? Cylinder block? Wouldn't mind it as a project. No upgrades, just get it running as good as stock. Just don't want to spend more money rebuilding than I could buy/sell one. I got tools and time! I really don't know how much I should expect to spend if I do it myself. I've seen some rebuild services for around 1600 and I know the majority of it is labor. Any thoughts? Thanks

Its junk if it threw a rod... Cases, Cylinders, and most likely the head is trashed also. Hook a chain to it and use it as a boat anchor.

If you have tools & time, I'd say go for it, you will learn something & it's a good project, just so you have skills for the finer points of measurements & tolerances. Oh, and coin for the parts, try ebay

Only a tear down will tell, could be a piston skirt got under the crank & punched a hole.

Yeah. I wont know till I tear into it. Not holding my breath. Got two holes: one in front of the headers and one on the top under the gas tank.

its not that bad. make sure the valves aren't leaking. use a Clymer manual and the forum... you should find all the help you need.

i just put mine back together after spinning #4. i should have just tossed the crank and put in an 08 stroker from APE. would have cost about the same as repair.
