and the cages are train cars.
Remember that the boxes have the perforated wheels that tear out and fold down(just for looks), and the string was there to tie multiple boxes/cars together.

Some of these were popular until the 90s! I remember walking around with my water bottle I used as my marble holder and remember the girls playing jacks.
