they did there job the best they could if he was indeed mentally ill I'm sure the family will raise hell but when some one is claiming bomb ya don't really have a lot to second guess

+1 you have to assume the worst case, IMO the air marshal did the right thing.

I read something about the wife chasing him screaming "My husband, my husband" and then telling someone he was off his anti bi-polar meds...

What kinda $hitty wife lets her hubby (assuming she actually even liked the guy) get on a plane while he is off his meds KNOWING the high and tight security these days and KNOWING that he flips out when off of his meds?

?

Hmmm...well that's ONE way of getting the life insurance early

The key point here is to remember that the moron was not shot for SAYING that he had a bomb in his bag. He was shot for reaching into the bag after claiming to have a bomb in the bag and being ordered to stop by the FAM. Congratulations to the FAM for a job well done. Condolences to the wife and family of the moron.

Air Marshall did it by the numbers IMO,I realize this is no consolation for the wife or family, but why would he state he had a bomb in the first place and then reach in the bag after said air marshal told him to get down and freeze? I'm thinking it was maybe suicide.???

The Marshall didn't have the luxury of mentally evaluating the moron to see if he was bipolar, just plain stupid, or a real terrorist. The moron placed the Marshall and all passengers in fear of immediate harm and likely death. In the Marshall's shoes I would have smoked the idiot, too.

The cold hard truth is that stupid hurts, or in cases like this stupid kills. I feel for the family of the poor stupid bastid, but he got what he asked for...

did he shoot him in the head or what? I'm TOTALLY for what he did, but taking out a knee can be no-fatally effective

I disagree , your hands still work. I have seen what some people can still do after taking a few to the chest.

For all the money that's been spent on the air marshal program, it's about time they shot someone.

Well at least the marshall hit what he shot at and the other people on the plane ended up ok.

BUt if you shoot "for effect" IE shoot to kill and score a central nervous shot, there is no voluntary or involuntary movement. That means no trigger pull or detonation action.Central nervous shot = limp noodle!

what he said...it looks cool in the movies to shoot them in the leg etc, but people move unlike paper targets...that coupled with the psychological goings on with the shooter (actually shooting at a living breathing human being, adrenaline dump, legal worries, etc. that are all flashing through the mind when deciding to pull the trigger) cause a dramatic decrease in accuracy. Taking a headshot is usually not advised, but here like NJ said an immediate stop to motor function was necessary. A determined individual can accomplish alot before he bleeds out from a mortal wound. Look at the FBI Miami shoot out back in the 80's. Same principle a hunter faces when a deer runs a long, long, way after being fatally wounded.
