Dead Man's Curve

A tad out of character for me, this isn't a joke. I'm not big on glorifying or scaring people over cycles and potential death, but this article is sad but has interesting coincidences. We have this big lake north of Des Moines called Sailorville and, like most lakes, it has twistie winding roads all around it that are posted at 35mph. It has a mile long bridge crossing the north part and a dam with a strait road across it on the south, followed by some curves. ALL the cyclists within 25 miles go here when the weather gets nice. I am now calling it Dead Man's Curve. In two seperate incidences, cyclists have died on that curve following the strait road. Both hit the guard rail. Both were at night. Both were around 3am. Both were traveling high rates of speed. I am unsure if the first fatality was wearing a helmet or not. The second set, a guy and a girl, were assumed not wearing helmets and died of head injuries. If you happen to ride thru Des Moines and around the lake, please, don't do it around 3am and don't speed. I did not know any of these people, but I feel their regret for the life they will never have.
