Hi there,

I was reading a few posts about dieing batterys, what is "starter clutch kick-back" is this a problem for this bike? I park my bike in a underground so using a tender is not an option as I do not have access to a power source. I ride my bike on longer trips lots so I hope this is not an issue.

Thanks

2003 model year onwards are equiped with a kick back clutch in the starter, to prevent the starter and cases being damaged in the event of the engine kicking back on start-up.

99-2002 are not so equiped and in the conditions of low battery voltage or not holding the starter button long enough, the engine may kick back and cause severe damage.

IT IS ONLY the 99-2002 that can suffer from this problem
there is a mod available from Suzuki for these years which upgrades them to the new set-up, also some guys are using
the battery from an ST 1300 honda which has more cranking amps, model number YTZ14S
Here is a link to this batteries specs

Yuasa YTZ14S

Also if youhold the starter button in just that little bit longer, it can increase your margin of safety

I'm a new 'Busa owner, but have many years experience with electrical systems on Hondas. One additional mod you can do to help with the kick-back problem is to install larger diameter electrical lines from the battery to the solenoid and solinoid to the starter motor. This will reduce line resistance and ensure that maximum current flows to the starter. Both the cable and terminals are available at any auto parts store. Take your old cables in with you to compare diameters with the new cable, and buy something larger. Also, it's a good idea to clean the terminals on an annual basis to ensure that resistance is not building up through corrosion. Good luck!
