Funny I was at Daytona bike week about 20 years ago and I was in a store looking in there phone book (yes you heard me!) looking for an address and I was standing next to a tall slender worn looking guy and when I walked out my friend said that’s Evil Knievel you were standing next to, it was a book or photo signing and I didn’t recognize him. My lose, I always admired EK.

Wow, amazing he live that long… the life threatening risks he took on motorcycles and he survived it all…. Then cancer came knocking.. RIP Robbie.

Just a thought, did you guys see in the news how Jeff Beck died the other day?
He was 78 and meningitis took him… another one of my favourite guitar slingers from my teenage days gone, but he sure gave out some great music and touched a lot of lives!

Unfortunately death is part of the living process... I will delay it until its no longer worthwhile.

It was my good fortune to see Evel perform in the early days (1970?) at the old Minnesota Dragways 3 miles east of Anoka, MN... He jumped 3 cars without a landing ramp. It made me want to do the same feat! lol !

Then in 1999 I saw him with a small crowd that had gathered at a gas station south of where the Silver State open road race ( SR # 318 ) had just been run earlier that day. He was just passing through in his motorhome at that time and was signing autographs and chatting up the folks there.

These landmarks in time reminds how short life really is.

Yea this was over 20 years ago, I was on my 97 ZX11 and I sold that bike in 2000. He looked like his better days had long passed, I recognized him once my friend told me who he was.

About the same timeframe ago, I sat next to Dale Earnhardt at the Daytona Olive Garden. We were on the "waiting for a table" bench. They treated him like any other customer. He hadn't gotten "big" yet.

He was actually a pretty nice guy. Good sense of humor.

I know he had a bad track reputation, but at Olive Garden, I would have enjoyed having dinner with him.

The movie/documentary 'Being Evel' is awesome if you've never seen it.

I just watched it... what a story ! I believe that a another movie exist that also tells his life story. I remember it from years ago and in one of the early scenes a sink hole opens up in his hometown of Butte Montana and a car or a person falls in it and is likely never seen again.

Funny how those guys all valued their fans. I have met a lot of celebrities and the bobo was the exception frankly. Not so today. Celebrities seem to think they are above everyone, even if they just dropped a niche hit and are on a one-hit-wonder tour. They forget we vote with ticket sales.

Never met or saw Evil or Robbie, but I had that toy. It was awesome. Usually, we smash toys in crazy unrealistic crashes, with Evil he outdid the toy many times.

Our military has the equivalent of the USO and we get these people to go to deployments to entertain troops, often time our teams would be assigned to provide close protection....sometimes the entertainers are decent, other times they are obnoxious and rude but not usually to us as they know often times we are all that separate them from the bad actors.

I recall one time we were providing protection for a group that USED to be popular but aren't any longer....(just popular enough to entertain bored troops), when they got a little big for their britches, one of my guys reminded them of the fact they haven't had anything on the charts in over a decade so they might want to pull in their horns and appreciate the pay check they are getting....all the rest of us could do was to not burst out laughing...

At the Frankfurt Airport there was a little USO lounge. 1991 or 92ish. Out of the way and quiet. I had a long layover. I just wanted to relax in a safe spot. I was watching a show called Tool Time. It was a comedy show that was getting popular.

I got into a conversation during breaks with a younger woman that seemed to have good sense of humor. She was like 2 seats down from me.

I asked what branch of service.
I'm not. I'm the Makita girl on tour with the USO.

I kidded her and said I don't believe you.

She took out a cardboard tube and pulled out a poster. Her holding some Makita tool (I could have cared less what) standing with it in her bikini.

She said I'll sign it if you like. I said sure I like tools with a laugh.

She said do you want me to sign it my real name or my stage name?

I'll take the real name.

I'm very glad she used her real name. My wife would have divorced me if she used her stage name.

Robbie Keneivel came to Roanoke, Va (about 45 minutes from my house) in 1996 for an outdoor jump at the civic center, I had tickets for my girlfriend and I at the time.
Well, apparently he came to town the night before, went out with one of the crew drinking, and decided they'de go knock on some local doors to see if anyone wanted to party with them.
Apparently they picked the wrong houses, and no one was interested...but a couple called the cops...booooooo.
That got his show cancelled the next morning, I was so disapointed.
It was all over the 3 local news stations.
He didn't harm or threaten anyone either, or really do anything illegal, other than be drunk in public. He was just looking for people to hang out with.
He was just a fun loving regular guy.
I Wish he would've showed up at my door!
My drinking days have long since passed, other than a couple beers on occasion, but back then, to party with the Captain, and one of my heros...it would've been awesome!
Poor guy got a bad rap on that one, as he had good intentions, lol
