Ease up folks
Ease up? Nothing to ease up about, I saw no excitement.

...no one is threatening your civil liberties.
I never said they were. If that's what you interpreted then you added it. I simply started with a rational premise "this is a free country" instead of an irrational premise like
because it just makes sense
.
Resume your normally scheduled program....
Yes, feel free to return to your normal programming.

No.

Last time I checked this was supposed to be a free country. My first bike was a GS1150E and I was 18 years old. I am now in my 40s and I have never been down. I know people who are in their 60s and are stupid. Either someone can pass the test for all motorcycles or no motorcycles.

Depends how you define freedom...

I think their should be some sort of progressive licensing for motorcycles..but Engine CC is not an appropriate method of restriction....

For Example...

a Suzuki GSXR 600 vs a Harley Davidson 883 Sportster....

The GSXR 600 is a way higher performance motorcycle than pretty much any Harley Davidson Motorcycle on the streets...Some of the larger Harley motors are pushing 1300cc's or higher...

Perhaps a more progressive licensing where you are allowed to operate certain levels of performance motorcycles with a basic license say up to most of 600cc-750cc sportbikes, and then after attending a advanced riders course or Certified Racing School you can apply for a higher classification to drive higher performance motorcycles such as most liter bikes and above.

Perhaps something like this would be enough to keep some people off of motorcycles that they are not quite skillfull enough to handle yet.

Thanks for that intelligent reply...I hadn't thought about the comparison of power between a cruiser and a sport bike. That definitely blows the idea of licensing based on age and engine size out if the water.

The question initially came to mind as I was watching my idiot neighbor kid tear down the street on his bike. After a little online research though, it turns out that us older guys are the ones getting killed the most. Either way I think I've adjusted my opinion to a 'disagree' on the subject. Thanks again for your reply.

It is not the size or the age, it is the Phisics and experience. Ever hear about countersteering? My belief about crashes involving the underexperienced is that if they see a problem coming at them from the left side, they naturally turn right and countersteer into the grill of the offender. If you eliminate the terminally stupid who just drive too fast for their level, I think that most accidents occur because the inexperienced countersteer into them by reflex. Experience teaches them to steer away. New riders crash right away if they get stupid.

Not so much age limit, but experience in general. I am all for graduated licenses for both cars and bikes.

Age does not matter too much, its about maturity. When I was 18 anything that was fast I rode extremely well, however knowing when not to drive irresponsibly was the issue. At 23 years of age now I am glad I waited to get the busa

No! But I do think everyone should have to complete a motorcycle training course... Especially one that includes a road ride.. Not just the parking lot stuff! and you should only be able to obtain your license if you can pass ALL aspects of the course!

I bought my 08 with my own money at 18... Had it for 3 years now, and havent dropped it. Havent gone to jail, havent gotten excessively large speeding tickets, nothing. So I think its an individual maturity issue.

Well imposing on one what others thinks goes completely against the notion of riding is a freedom.. The wild card that wants to do as they want to do. I understand the concept of why you would do that, but if they were going to kill themselves on a 1300, they'd probably do it on a 600 as well. You'd think possibly quicker even as they would be quicker to learn power and clutched wheelies on a 600.. Now if you think limit the pre-18 years to a 250.. Maybe, but really.. It was bad enough I started on a 400.. 250, I'd probably stopped riding a long time ago thinking that was it. lol.. j/k but still.. Instead of limiting what they ride, focus on education and mentoring. i.e.... a real gun nut's house hold doesn't hide the guns from the kids.. Usually take them to the range and you even see the kids having their 'own' gun.. But they know about them, how they work, how deadly they are and are taught respect for the gun..... hmmm. novel concept.
