Well....it was the head bearings. There was definite wear and notchiness to the cup on the bottom bearing, the one fixed on the bottom of the stem.
Once I had them out the notchiness could be felt easily by just turning the bearing in the cup itself. Probably overtightened or too many...
Does anyone have a photo of the nut(s) on their steering stem?
I bought a socket from Ebay for £30 with pegs in the right place for the nut but it doesn't fit, the pegs are too deep. Emailed the guy a picture of the nut and he reckons it mustn't be the proper nut for a Hayabusa?!?!
I'm not at...
Hi I had a problem with vibration from the front end mostly when braking and cornering. Thought it might have been the head bearings so I've stripped the whole front end ready for the bearings to go in.
Currently waiting for a socket to remove the stem nuts but one thing I've noticed is that the...
Hi - just got around to looking at this.
Stripped the front end down. The stem is still on the bike (while I try and get a tool to remove the nuts). There doesn't seem to be too much play and it's turning well from left to right though I have noticed that a collar under the nuts can be rotated...
Hi - Thanks for the reply.
I'll give it another go - Had a breaker bar on it and it couldn't budge it. I thought I must have been doing something wrong but now I know I'll just see if I can give it a bit more without putting my back out.
Cheers

Hi,
How do I remove the front wheel on my bike?
I've attached pics of the spindle.
The outer nut takes 27mm socket but there's no where else on the spindle I can put a socket / hex head.
Cheers

Hi - nope, I haven't checked the head bearings. I bought the bike a couple of months ago and no doubt this is just another one of the things the previous owner failed to mention.
thanks for the info though - I'll take a look tonight.
Cheers

I'm getting a slight knock / vibration from the front end of the bike.
It's apparent under braking and I sometimes get the same thing when cornering which can be scary.
Does it sound like it could be the head bearings?
Is there a definitive way to tell without stripping it all apart?
Cheers
Rob
Thanks for the reply - I'm checking it out.
Due to the starting problem I have with the bike I was looking to update the starter setup to that found on '03+ bikes.
A bit digging around and I found what could be an alternative :

Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to uprate the starter setup on my '99 to an '03 one? Apologies if this has been answered before - I've spent a good few hours going through posts and can't find a definitive answer.
Hi I've turned the crank by hand no problem other than the amount of effort required to do it.
All the teeth look fine, once in place I can't see anyway that they could slip or not engage?
Cheers
Thanks for the quick reply. I had the casings off and everything looked fine, there was no wear on the starter clutch teeth and everything seemed to knit together well.
Am I missing something / should I be looking at something else?
Thanks
First off - hi I'm a new busa owner and new to the site!
Recently got myself a 1999 Busa for a tour of France I'm doing in the Summer.
Gone to start it and there's a hell of a clatter from the starter assembly. Ensured there was a high output battery attached and that it was fully charged...
