NY Gov Signs “SLEEP” Act Banning Loud Exhausts

Oh Boy - I wont be crossing the border anytime soon with a modified exhaust. Am I reading this correctly?

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has signed the SLEEP Act into law in New York State. That, if you’re wondering, stands for “Stop Loud and Excessive Exhaust Pollution.” This law increases penalties for illegally modified mufflers on all vehicles, not just motorcycles.

Fines, which used to be $250 per violation, increase to $1000 under the new law. State inspection stations will be required to verify motorcycles’ exhausts are legal.

Specifically, an excerpt from the bill itself states it is now “illegal to sell, offer for sale, or install a cut-out, bypass or similar device for the muffler or exhaust system of a motor vehicle or motorcycle.” Any shops or inspection stations that are found to be in “willful violation” of this law three times within eighteen months will lose their inspection and/or operating certification.

I suspect that any motorcycle exhaust which is aftermarket and approved will not be hit by this but I wonder is the juice worth the squeeze? What additional reasons do we need to be pulled over when riding a Hayabusa :)

Well if you see a cop, pull in the clutch.

I still think that is useless legislation. More money to skim.

You are going to see more and more of this sort of thing as citizens are getting sick and tired of all the extremely loud exhausts....something has sparked the reason for this to be signed...

When I was in Alberta Canada, the police had DB detectors on their cars and were pulling people over left and right (mostly Harleys).

I'm even getting sick and tired of hearing all these loud exhausts making a racket.....just this morning I was at a light and a guy in a pickup ahead of me had such a loud exhaust, I couldn't hear my stereo...pretty bad when I have to turn up the volume just to hear over his truck...

Yeah, well, another way to control, and rob, the masses...and let big brother tell us no matter that it was OUR money spent, THEY will tell you what to do...heil hitler...

Being part of society means following laws society has set out for us to follow, without these laws we would be subjected to living in a failed state.

There are already many rules and laws we follow each and every day in order to drive (which is a privilege and not a right).

Having to listen to obnoxiously loud and annoying exhaust systems is something I don't relish and if there is a law against them, I am all for that.

BTW this is not the the day to be bringing up the former socialist dictator of WW2 Germany...

Sure is...are we people, or sheeple?? we cannot allow ourselves to be governed in every aspect of life..I dont have bullet hole scars fighting for "control" I have them fighting for FREEDOM..

A set of obnoxious pipes doesnt do anything for me either, but, the right to have them does

Oh, and I am a american on Americas veterans day,,most appropriate for today..any vet was willing to die for freedom, not cotrol, here, or abroad

What about our right to not have to listen to them, where does that right go?

There has to be a limit on what is declared a "right" driving is a privilege to start with, not annoying everyone around you while doing it is the right of everyone else.

Again..I agree with that..hate the fart cans, lol, and the lawn tractors named harley, but, their right to have, and a persons right to paint their house, or, any of the other things this country was founded on, and fought wars, to protect, FREEDOM..

I'm not forced to listen to either, for long..a stop light, maybe? same with the rap music vibrating the trunk lid..but, again, freedom...when you start to give it up, more and more gets taken, till its socialism..F that..oh, and dont presume to tell me whats appropriate..You are not m,y mother, nor am I 7 yrs old..I differed from your opinion.. dont assume you can correct me.

Glad you realize I'm not your mother....

Who's correcting you by the way? I am debating an issue with you not correcting you.

LOL..you forgot the "not appropriate day" thing..You aint talking to a kid, nor a punk...

My opinion is as valid as yours..just DIFFERENT..I didnt try and chastise you..you have the FREE right to have, and voice your opinion..

I spent 2 yrs in a hole fighting for that.,.be glad we did

........as you aren't a "kid" or a "punk" you should have known better then.

I did my own fair share of time in uniform doing the business as well...

Freedom is limited or people would have the freedom to walk into your driveway and demand their freedom to take your motorcycle...Freedom is a word thrown around far too easily.

There are two sides to every coin...the freedom for someone to make noise and annoy everyone around them and the freedom of those people to not like it.

Again, you have your ideas, I have mine..looong reach between taking your bike, and the pipes..were you not just trumpeting the rpm act?? or, is it just you didnt like that truck in front of you for 30 sec? lol

You forget the other people around you. Those that live in the street on a permanent basis where the hord of w@nker HD guys go past every weekend at full noise. Or the same three idiots with the Akro cans on a 250 or a 300 tearing up the street at full noise.

Don't always assume it's about you. There are always others to consider when we start talking about noise pollution.
