Let's talk radar detectors and their setup

I highly recommend Passport and V1 if $$ is not an issue. I have and use the Valentine one, Redline, 9500, 8500, as well as two laser jammers.

I actually have a Beltronics which i use now, so i will run both and see what happens. The beltronics is the best IMHO for this state, but it does not scramble laser or radar readings. Frankly, I don't need a lot of protection. When on common roads I actually usually stick to the speed limits or the +10 rule max. on the back roads I'm usually going so fast a RD is not going to matter (90+). It is actually possible that the big guys are slandering RMR because they are offering comprobable products at a big discount. If this motorcycle specific unit works at all it's a good unit for a motorcycle where the RD must be carried stealthy.

It will be interesting to ride with the STI Driver and the RMR both powered up and test them for effectiveness. My feelings are it's hard to protect yourself on the road anyway so either don't speed or carry a couple hundred extra bucks on a trip.

Arch, keep in mind that two RD in close proximity can interfere with each other's operation, so it's best to take one at a time along the same route.

For the record both Passport and Beltronics are manufactured by the same company; Escort Inc

Got the MR radar in the mail today. Looks like this one is a no go. It weights a fraction of the Beltronics unit and is obviously very cheap. It must have a plastic horn or something, no way a metal one could be this light. I think I may return it without even turning it on.

 yeah Fallen I know what you mean...... when I was looking @ radars that's 1 of the reasons I didn't go with that brand. It just looked cheap compared 2 the other models.

Call them up, and express your concern. Let's see what they say?

Well I will give it a try since it's here. The guy across the street said he would buy it for $125 if I don't want it. He doesn't have a RD and says $125 for some protection is worth it. I will call them and ask them what the return policy is and voice my quality concerns.

Installed!

Took a bunch of pictures along the way, and will do a detailed write-up later on. No riding at the moment with all the snow/ice on the ground.

Plenty of things to do next - stainless steel braided lines for front/rear brakes and the clutch, install speed bleeders along with that, clean calipers, iridium spark plugs, clean air filter.

I like and have a valentine. What I like about it is the directional arrows. This feature really saved my butt a few times. On one paticular trip my valentine radar was pinging both front and rear indicators. While rolling with group of unknown bikers which had other types of radar but without the arrows. We slowed down to a legit speed a min l8tr passed a Boggy nesting in the middle of the berm. After we passed him my rear indicator was still pinging at the boggy we passed and the foward arrow as well. The group took off and I kept it at a legit speed only to find out there was another boggy ahead. Guess who got pull over? The group that shot off assumed the threat was far behind, not.

Anywho, radar detectors to me are ony effective when there are other vehicles on the road ahead of you. The vehicles ahead will shield your speed while the detector tells you to slow down. Once you are hit with radar, game over. Now if you really want to do it right then get a radar jammer. They work and cost some cheese, trust me. Also, turn off your radar detector in states where its not allowed, especially if you're the only vehicle on the road passing a Highway Trooper.

Heres an old photo with mine mounted to the windscreen.

I got mo time than money!

That totally won't work in Virginia. If we could ride with the Radar in the open this would all be simple........

I don't know how you guys can live in VA.

No detectors allowed but the cops get to have both radar and radar detectors. Only VA and DC they are outlawed. I guess they need the $$$.

Go over 90 mph and get put in jail. :banghead: I'll pass.
