I pass these all the time especially when out west on open roads.

Florida Department of Transportation - Office of Maintenance Memorial Marker Program

They are usually same as above, the marker along with personal set up items. There is one I pass all the time on the way to work with a candle that is always lit. Sometimes there is even a few bottles of beer right next to it. Amazing how they sit there forever.

Anyway it is a constant reminder of the dangers of the street.
Just curious if y'all have similar in your states?

They are here, but not done by the state. But the state and county workers seem to leave them alone if people put them up...

SC came up with a state deal but most people are still do the make shift things

hmm never knew that states actually did that, always thought it was the family keeping it up..

I am very sorry, I just saw the memorial. No, our state does not post anything, but people will generally leave things alone that are placed there by loved ones.

So long as its not a sport bike rider that died, yes, there are a few in my area.

There was a cross at an intersection where a friend was killed last year, we had to take down or the highway department would have. Tho, there is one on an express way entrance ramp where a drunken Harley rider failed to navigate the turn. Weird....

Hmmm , We get mixed feelings here in Kansas with roadside memorials . I work for the State Department of Transportation as a Highway Maintenance Supervisor and our Policies say that anything other than a State Issued sign would be considered illegal and will be removed . Now , I have my own opinion about it and I personally don't like it ! The main reason I don't is because it can be a traffic hazard especially when people pull over on the shoulder on a major interstate to go see it which can cause accidents and There have been many where I am at . These roadside memorials seem to be a target fixation with a lot of the traveling public ! The State of Kansas has made concessions with a couple of families that have lost loved ones on our highway by letting them put up a couple of Crosses way off of the right of way so it won't be such a distraction to the traveling public . When a family member wants to visit one of the memorials they call me and I escort them out to them and provide traffic control .

Around here they almost seem to be right where the person was found or died because some are right on the street or sidewalk and some are well off the road out by a tree. There are many around me that line the canal banks because lots of folks wind up in the water.

They are everywhere here. Most I have seen are make shift. I don't mind them, At least people are remembered

i am absolutely amazed how safe of drivers the Jewish and atheist drivers are... i never see a marker for them along side the road anywhere!!

I always thought that was what the cemetary was for,,otherwise the hospital would be covered up with them,,I personally think they shouldn't be there, it shouldn't be about the 'place' the person died,,but that they died and are remembered in a place of rememberance,,like a cemetary,,just my personal thoughts,,,

now, a good friend of mine son was killed at a intersection a couple of years ago on a bike, and it just so happens to be the same stretch of road they had to go to get to thier house, they did have a marker there but has since been removed, it just became to unbearable of a reminder to them everytime they passed it, they have sinced moved out of state, just to great of a loss for them as with any family. i would agree that in some cases a marker might be nice as a way to remember a loved one, or to mark a dangerous intersection so that the area is recognized as a hazard and maybe the state take notice, but maybe these markers are best served by the grave and not the roadside.

I think by the letter of the law it would be considered littering and they should all be taken down or removed.

not sure if the state does it or not. They actually had a news story about families fighting about placement of a marker because there was one and someone wrecked literally into the same exact tree. I get folks want to have a marker but I don't care for them particularly. My concern is more for safety than them being an eye sore. The driving around this area is hazardous enough without having to dodge folks putting them up or the actual stuff they put up that blows off into the road, occasionally causing additional accidents.

The trick to the "official" signs like the one up top is that no one would be able to read them here except in rush hour. Its the only time that you could actually drive slow enough (or close to the speed limit) to see what they said. Sadly there would probably be so many of them in close proximity that they would look like road edge markers in some of the turns on the southern state ::9
