" Youth is wasted on the Young " - George Bernard Shaw

I live in a college town with a student population of about 20K, there is lots of beautiful young people here. I see model quality girls ( many with fake blonde hair and aftermarket chests installed ) there is a bunch of tanning and hair salons, many business barely make it through the summer until the students return.

My Dad has me now helping him with his house rentals that are just a couple blocks from the university. The homes are old, built in the 40's but they are clean and comfortable and close enough to walk to school. We frequently need to repair things and we cant access the home usually til noon because they are sleeping. Sadly most of the tenants dont know how to do anything and sometimes when they attempt it they ruin something. Recently a house full of guy's couldnt figure out the toilet had over flowed and was flooding the hallway, they thought the water was coming from the plumbing in the wall ... I simply turned off the valve to the toilet, plunged the stuck bowl and turned the valve open again. Last week a house of girls called and were freaked out about the "mold" growing in the bath room, we inspected and it appeared neither the shower, toilet or any part of the bathroom had been cleaned in months, they had not opened the window to vent the steam at all since Oct. We cleaned their bathroom, even the walls and made a few suggestions.

I realize that each generation thinks younger folks are not as bright as they were or that their styles, music and goals are flawed. My parents I am sure thought the same of me  But at 16 I could fix a flat or a leak or paint ... Most kids can facebook, text, quote latest movie and song lyric's, but I fear common sense is vanishing from the majority. ???

I read a forwarded email this morning which made me think ...

It was credited to Bill Gates but not confirmed :

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Sadly true...

I worked with high school students and I know where you are coming from. Had a female student ask me to help her with her car. It wouldn't start and she couldn't figure it out. I was looking the car over and noticed that when I tried to start it the gas light came on. She said it had been a couple of days and she did not know what the light meant. The tank was empty and bone dry. She was pretty embarrassed.
