I decided to get a bunch of people together today to go for one last ride before the weather got to cold, had around 20 bikes out and around 200 miles of riding. We got close to home and started branching off and I took my turn to head to my house, I decided to get on it one last time before I put the beast away for the winter and that's all it took. I was in 3rd gear when I heard a loud bang, the engine was idleing fine and ran great like always but i had no gears. Well I costed as far as I could being that I was only 1/2 mile from my house and eventually came to a stop on the side of the road. I got off my bike and that's when I seen it, my chain hanging down and the front sprocket missing and the cover in peices. I'm not even upset about it cause now I have a reason to do the engine build I have been wanting to do but didn't have the push to do it. However, did anyone on here have this happen to them before. What is all in to changing the output shaft and do you guys have any tips or pointers on some extra things to do...

Make sure you didn't damage the casing. Might as well go through the tranny and get second gear undercut.

Split the cases, get the entire trans undercut, replace the output shaft with a heavy duty one, check the forks and drum . . . and put a high output oil pump gear in there while you're at it . . .

Thanks frank, I was gunna call you tomorrow. I plan on the heavy duty shaft and backcut tranny but I always told myself that if I have to split the case, i'm building the engine to increase the boost. Well I guess it's the perfect time. I'm running a safe 5lbs now but would like to increase to 12-14. What all will I need. I'm gunna call tomorrow so we can talk and get some prices cause my christmas list just went way up, lol..

Any mods that influenced this to happen?

It has a lot of mods on it, Velocity Racing Stage 1 turbo kit with 12 over Velocity arm along with a big list of other items. I was actually laughing when it happened cause now this gives me a reason to build the internals, I already have my list in the works..

Sorry about the bike. I'll leave the rebuild advice to the pros and it seems they've already spoken :)
I think your lucky you didn't crash. I'd also be curious as to what caused that to happen?
Who's to say you dont redo everything and have same thing happen?

Figured you were turbo but it wasn't specified. Just making sure the non-turbo guys don't have to worry about it happening to them.

I ride my bike a lot and like to get on it when I have a nice open road, I have heard about the output shafts breaking under a good load. I know they area 30mm on the inside and only 25mm on the outside, the change in size is where the weak point comes from. I have major plans for the bike now, gunna be ordering rods, pistons, heavy duty output shaft, valve springs, retainers, studs, back cut tranny, adj cam gears and some other items. Just enough to crank the boost up to around 12lbs if not more..

Just got my Busa back. I love to whack 2nd gear and it's been skipping for a couple months. Did a 1397 big bore kit a couple years ago. Mechanic showed me where the spline was ready to snap, and that Busa's are known for stripping 2nd gear.
Anyway had everything beefed up and gears undercut. Shifts better then it ever did, even when she was new!

:please:

Anyone who is aggressively dragracing the bike has to consider that it might happen. A major holeshot where the clutch doesn't slip and the tire grabs hard can do it. Anybody going into the bottom end should consider a heavy duty output shaft . . .

I agree 100% with frank, I am sure the an N/A bike can have the same failure with a few good hard launches. If for any reason anyone has to open the engine up, the output shaft should be one of the 1st things to consider upgrading.
