Turbo Air Filter clearance, dragging, options, intake routing?

Ok, here's what is likely one of the stupidierist questions you are going to hear for awhile, but just have to ask...

I don't have a turbo bike yet, but have a deposit down and plans to pick up.

Is it just an illusion from all the photography I've seen, or do these low left side air filters stand a chance to be the first thing that drags in a left corner?

While I'm here, are there other options for what sort of air filters can be used (dimensionally)?

As a machine shop owner, I'm already re-designing this (which is dumb without having one yet, but I can't help it).

It seems like a larger diameter (9-10"ish), shorter (i.e...flatter) would work better and narrow the machine's width.... especially in a cowl (scoop).

I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel...yet...

Ideas?

Some fit within the body work like the rcc gen 2
just depends which kit you get
but if you buy something with a big filter you can usually find a shorter one in the K&N catalog, just watch the cheap filters with inverted end cap, the cap is not necessarily secure and its initial placement restricts flow

They make an under fairing air filter that would take you back to a stock ground clearance. It will or in the past cost you a little performance, but would be well worth it for me.


NEVER OWNED A TURBO ANYTHING ....

i have a few slim filters if you get bike and are in neighborhood to try them out..

Did you change the heading or did i miss the intake routing bit
You can reroute the intake path, its not all that simple as there is very limited room and you do want it to seal well
my landspeed bikes get there air from the centre of the front fairing, no headlights to worry about , and made fibreglass ducts to take that air to the turbo
but my streetbike runs a simple filter about 3" tall, 7" od and the 3" inlet , all fits under fairing and i ride in any weather but not through deep water

OZ, I was never gone! All my replies just went to somewhere in the ether and suddenly all posted (sporadically) at once tonight....making me sound like I might be posting from a padded cell somewhere to all who read this in the future.

Really I don't mind the filter off to the side, and I plan to take up Goldenchild's offer to try some shorter ones, but I really want my pegs to be the first thing that touches asphalt. Dragging a filter just seems Mickey Mouse to me.
I never got an answer if the turbo owners here drag filter first, but I did talk to a guy offline and the answer was often yes...filter is the first thing to touch.

So... I'll try some shorter filters and build my "Filter Fairing" that I mentioned in the rain post, and see where it goes!

I sure wish I had this bike already so I can start tearing it apart ;)

I ground the hell out of mine. The bottom of the filter had a flat spot on it. A couple of times I went so low that it actually pulled the filter off of the turbo itself. Decide what you want. If you want a turbo bike that doesn't affect the handling, get a smaller system. When you extend the wheelbase, it lowers the bike anyway. That's why I bought a second busa. Two bikes for two different things.:thumbsup:

Most Certainly! Unfortunatley, in 2003 when I did mine, the velocity stage 2, Dbl BB with water inj. was a great system. Technology has come a long way. The next system I have installed will be an RCC and it will be like the one you are referring to. I was just stating that I do Drag the S**T out of my filter and if you put a system on that has a filter like many of us do, you will drag it unless you Just ride it in a straight line. Although I do grind the filter, there are still No unworn sections of my rear tire. :laugh:
