rear wheel play

Hi all, just was doing the "pre-winter" clean and noticed that when I hold my sprocket and chain and move the rear tire back and forth their is about a 1/8-1/4 inch of play, is this normal,,,,,,,,and why? The sprocket and chain are held tight but when I rotate the tire back and forth I notice this play in the hub assembly.

Are you talking about If you hold the tire still and grab the rear sprocket?  If the sprocket/hub can move seperate from the rim then the drive cushions are shot.  There are 6 rubber cushions inside of the hub that absorb the shock in the drive train. Item #17
part number: 64651-31001 Absorber, Hub Shock

Could be the wheel bearing. But not positive on it.

I guess what I meant to say is when I rotate the tire back and forth not side to side. Everything is tight but their still is a 1/4 play.

Yup, Some play... That's kinda the whole purpose, and why some wheels are marked "FOR RACE USE ONLY" They lack a REAL cush drive and transfer all the shocks and loads directly to the finaldrive and tranny.

Sounds like your good to go...
