Had to replace a fuel line on my oem fuel pump assembly. There is a large piece of foam about 1/2 in thick that sits over fuel pump assembly. What is its purpose help keep heat off fuel pump assembly? Should i put it back or leave it out? 1999 busa 18,500 miles

That's exactly what it's for. Put it back in place. I left mine off, 3 months later the fuel pump quit. Could have been coincidence, but we know it's a crappy design, so give it all the help you can.

Yup definately put it back. You will kill the pump heat wise if you leave it off.
