All those little things that you can't see make a difference...

Yeah I hope so. I'm also going to be running calico coatings bearings for the rod and main bearings.

....BUT they should have de-edged and de-burred the pistons before they coated the tops. Too many razor sharp edges on JEs. Have you ever heard of problems with the coatings wearing off the pistons and getting in the oil/pick up etc? I thought I read something about that last year...

Have not heard that before.  I'll look into it. Do you see burrs on my pistons???

he didnt mean burrs, he meant that sharp edges cause hot spots in the combustion chamber and that leads to melted pistons
thats what he was referring to

I STILL DONT FOLLOW. THE PISTONS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME, JUST HAVE A COATING ON THEM. 5 THOUSANDS THICK I BELIEVE. IF ANYTHING IT WOULD SMOOTH OUT ANY SHARP EDGES.

most builders round the edges on new turbo pistons
the edges are sharp and will cause hotspots
that is what is usually removed on pistons
i know you have a coating on them
he was just curious as to why they didnt round the top first

Its no big deal really...just something some guys do. John Noonan from JE Pistons told me to de-edge my new pistons before putting them in so I did. I took the edges off with a dremel tool, then went back with 400 and 600 wet sand paper to smooth it all back out. Not sure if it actually helps prevent detonation or not but....When the guy from JE tells you to do it....you do it..LOL

The one on the left is de-edged, the one of the right is stock out of the box:

It helps,.......the tip of an angled edge gets much hotter than a radiused edge. Hot spots cause detonation,.........thus,.........causing BOOM!!!!
