Avatar blues

I know this has been adressed b4, and I THINK I am doing everything correctly, however when I click on the ADD MY OWN PIC FOR MY AVATAR option; this is what I get: Sorry, that is not a valid file extension. I'm really tired of looking at the one provided, what am I doing wrong? BTW I have uploaded my personal avatar on other sites and it has worked fine!
