This is what im wondering. Hell, one guy on here didn't do anything to his chain for 10,000miles. Not that that is recommended but you wouldn't notice any problems for a while.
I rev mine up a little to help the clutch disengage before i put it in first every stop. Been doing it for years. I guess its an old motorcross bike habit. It mentions this in the manual also. Harleys take it to another level though.
The DRZ400sm crowd at thumper talk where anal about changing it EVERY time as the bevel it develops might crack your case. They recomended atleast flipping it over only once.

I believe the light shouldn't come on until you only have 1.3gallons of gas from a 5.5gallon tank would be 4.2 gallons used. Sounds about right.
When mine is damn near the bottom of the red after the fuel light has been on i usually get to the gas station with .5(1/2)gallon left.
