THE TAX SYSTEM EXPLAINED IN BEER

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100...If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this..
.
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve ball. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20." Drinks for the ten men would now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men? The paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his fair share?
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by a higher percentage. They decided to follow the principle of the tax system they had been using, and he proceeded to work out the amounts he suggested that each should now pay.

And so the fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% saving).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% saving).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% saving).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% saving).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% saving).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But, once outside the bar, the men began to compare their savings.
"I only got a dollar out of the $20 saving," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man, " but he got $10!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar too. It's unfair that he got ten times more benefit than me!"
"That's true!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back, when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "we didn't get anything at all. This new tax system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had their beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and government ministers, is how our tax system works. The people who already pay the highest taxes will naturally get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas, where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Sure does make it simple and hard to refute, doesn't it? Why can't our elected officials figure it out...

Flat tax or fair tax...I don't think we should punish people for being sucessful.

They should pay the same percentage that I pay PERIOD.

Also, corporate taxes should be drastically reduced, not just to create
imediate jobs and TRUELY stimulate the economy (which it would surely do)
but perminately.

I don't understand why people, and in particular THIS ADMINISTRATION is
bent on raping businesses and designating them as some EVIL CAPATILASTS...

News flash....who pays corporate taxes....YOU DO...hello, McFly. :banghead:

The idea is to get govt' to it's proper MINIMAL size and let freedom ring

i agree, i wish we had a simple flat or fair tax system. everyone has to pay thier way equally. and im definately not rich.

Drop income tax & add in a federal sales tax.
That way, everyone is taxed according to what they consume, not what they make.

While I agree that it's ridiculous that someone should be punished for being successful, I also know that if they were to reduce the taxes paid by those that are more successful, everyone else would be paying more taxes. Since the rich are in the minority, this will never happen because those who are "poor" (and driving new cars) will never settle for having to pay more taxes in order to make it equal.

If they were to just reduce the percentage that the rich pay and not increase what the poor/middle class pays, the government would go belly up in a very short time.

Tax reform needed...YES!
Am I smart enough to figure out how it needs to be reformed...probably not.

How much flat tax you figure it would take to be equivalent of what the current tax system is?

I am neither a finical expert nor an economist. But what really steams me up, is that I pay roughly 23% of my yearly income in taxes, and those that make 3 times as much pay between 12% and 14%. The rules favor the wealthy not the common citizen.

Ok, I'm done now. :soapbox: I'll go back to :40__s:

Never fear.

Our glorious country was founded due in part to the belief that there can be "no taxation without representation".

We're aaaaalmost back to that "no representation" part of the saying. No taxation will surely follow. Right? What...?

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh :oh: , what tax rate table are you looking at :eh:

June 6th is our tax freedom day which works out to 42.6% of our pay. I beleive the U.S. is April 9th wich is about 26.9% of your pay. Guess thats a quick guide to see how much tax you pay in the year, thats all taxes included.

this is not a secret....

politicians from both the left and the right have know this....

the poor and middle classes have been supported by the rich for decades.

PS: flat tax, or even a sales tax system will never work....because we have been conditioned and brainwashed to think that people that are successful and have money somehow owe it to to rest of us.

I am amazed at how many anti obama, anti socialist, anti- redistribution of wealth people have no problem with the current tax system that punishes the successful, and rewards those that put the least into it.

I'm not sure I understand this please elaborate. The anti-obama, anti-socialist, anti-redistribution of wealth people (ME) hate the current tax system, and I'm one of the ones paying into it. If you substitued "pro" for "anti", It would make sense to me, as those pro-socialists like the current tax system, and in fact want to go even further with it. The anti-socialists are the ones that want to change it to a more fair model....

Totally agree that a fair or flat tax system is unpassable because majority of votes don't pay and live off those who do.

This has nothing to do with the tax tables. The average taxpayer doesn't have enough left over at the end of the day to hide from their taxable income. The tax rate tables only apply to taxable income, not total income.

I don't know of ANY anti socialist, anti- redistribution of wealth people that
DO NOT HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM with the current tax system that punishes
success.

Politicians don't seem to want to address it, oh they will champion a tax cut
but not sweeping reform of the system...maybe they are afraid of a huge(r)
revenue shortfall or maybe loosing party support...dunno, it makes nothing
but sense to me and doesn't seem like it's that difficult ???.

History has shown low taxes will boom the economy and you'll actuall end up
with more revenue.

Enact fair/flat tax in 2011, I realize the deficit shortfall initially and no that's not
o.k. but the economic boom that will result will bounce back and level off,
then balance the budget accordingly. They need to run their house like
we run ours...you run out of money...your done. That's the size govt' is period.

The 5 million page tax code is a joke...say buh bye...it should be 2 pages long.

The other thing I always thought they should do budget wise is instead of using only dollar figures,
each line gets a percentage (example .00001%) of the total budget and the total
can not add up to more than 100%. Sooo...if you want to increase department "X",
you can't do it without sliding money out of department "Y". So you better base
your priorities (just like we do) carefully...and if your out of money in June...
no more Stimulas till next payday...January.

we had this discussion in April......and we will have it again April 2011. Everybody will get upset because the "welfare mom" down the street will get a tax return, and they will complain. they will say thing like "the gov. is destroying the middle class".

I or someone else will post the facts and statistics that show that the "middle class" actually pays very little in taxes. The truth is 90% of the tax is paid by the "upper classes".

then the .org will talk about how the upper class should pay more, and find a way to justify it....we had this discussion.
