what a ignorant statement

Setting all the old tired (yet valid) arguments about the evils of religion in history, the fact is, religion did a huge amount of damage to me personally and to a great many individual people who I know, also personally.

If religion is working for you, more power to you. But if you're of the belief that because I don't subscribe to your religious beliefs or that my disbelief is somehow making the world more evil, I can only say that your own sensibilities are in question in a big way.

Let's put it this way: I've seen just as much good come from non-religious people as from religious people. If it's a discussion of pros and cons, the evidence is simply not there. In other words, you cannot show that religion of any flavor is going to make my life, or anyone else's better.

It's been tried before and failed . . . .

"Young people are growing up less religious and the most religious generations are dying out. At the same time, support for secular government and greater tolerance is rising with each new generation. Or to put it another way: the future looks bright for humanism."

That's good news as far as I'm concerned.

If I'm going to hell (and I'm not Catholic or Christian so I Must Be) all of my friends will meet me there for a very large reunion.

Somehow, my wife and I have raised an open-minded daughter who shows no prejudices, empathizes with others, and knows the difference between right and wrong. How the hell did we manage that without organized religion breathing down our necks and telling us what to think?

It should not come as a surprise to any that humanism will grow and religion will die.

Christians will be mocked and laughed at, all will turn against them.

What you all boast and brag about now was prophesied over 2000 years ago. These things must come to pass, nothing can stop it the weak will fall away and the many will become few.

Matthew 24

Signs of the End of the Age

4Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ,[a]' and will deceive many. 6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

15"So when you see standing in the holy place 'the abomination that causes desolation,' spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand— 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17Let no one on the roof of his house go down to take anything out of the house. 18Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. 19How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 20Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. 21For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. 22If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it. 24For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible. 25See, I have told you ahead of time.

26"So if anyone tells you, 'There he is, out in the desert,' do not go out; or, 'Here he is, in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. 27For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.

29"Immediately after the distress of those days
" 'the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'[c]

30"At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

32"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 33Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it[d]is near, right at the door. 34I tell you the truth, this generation[e] will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 35Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Great writeup Ron, so am i safe in assuming you're Christian?

If so, kudos to you my friend, i'm a strong Christian as well. As long as we stay faithful to him, all will be well in the end.

God loves all of us, we just must be willing to accept Him. All he asks is for you to ask him into your heart and be loyal to Him. It's THAT easy. "From what i've come to understand, i'm NOT the everlasting know-it-all."

A man i look up to in this area, "religion," said... "We aren't sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners."

Yeah, Ron is among a VERY short list of Christians for whom I hold a deep respect.

That's exactly what I am doing with my 2 young sons...I wrote a "book" on this, but opted to delete it simply because I don't need to give anyone more ammo to fight me...in the end, I think we all have our families' best interests in mind and you want your children to be a productive part of society, to make his/her way in life...we all do tend to disagree on how we get from point A to point B, but in the end, it comes down to personal choices we all make and hopefully we'll all "mesh" and meet somewhere in the middle...

Honestly I think it has to do with common sence. Science is explaining more and more of the world and how things work, as this happens it leaves less and less room for supernatural explination. Kinda like a majic trick is mysterious and awe inspiring untill you know how it's done then it's not that big a deal anymore. We are starting to unravel the majic trick a little at a time so the old explinations of religon are getting harder to swallow as truth, you can see this everytime the world was supposed to end and didn't
ices_rofl.gif

It is inevitable that factual knowledge will kill out religon as we know it, good or bad it will happen. Just like children out grow santa clause and the easter bunny, humanity will out grow religon and the belief in gods. It wont be anytime soon and none of us will ever know about it but it will happen.

So much to add and agree with there, but I'm so done with this argument and have grown tired of the fight...I just do what I feel is right and allow the next guy/gal to do exactly the same for themselves. If religion is what gets many through the day, I'm all for it...if my lack of religious guidance is what guides me, why should anyone else care?

Those stories from my Dad have always stuck with me and he often wonders what happened to those kids with their entire lives ahead of them...odd...

That is one of the problem with Christians. Christians often do things that are not of the leading by God and they screw everything up.

Marc 13.32 flat out states:

The Day and Hour Unknown

32"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33Be on guard! Be alert[f]! You do not know when that time will come. 34It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!' "

So the bible that Chrisitans read and are supposed to know flat out tells everyone that NO ONE, not even Jesus will know the day or the hour until that time comes.

So any Christian that predicts when the world will end, when Jesus will come back or anything pertaining to this issue is not only in confflict with docterine but they become a stumbling block for others and a hinderance to God

Uhh errrrr just thought I would throw that out there. So yeah, Christians have really screwed up and have caused alot of generations grief because of this
