How hot should the rectifier get?

Out of curiousity I felt the rectifier after free revving the engine for a minute while checking something else out and it was pretty damn hot. I couldn't keep my hand on it. How hot do they normally get? I realize that their is no air flow with it sitting still so there is less cooling but????

i had 2 like comp. fans blowing on it on my VFR, they were common problems

It's the regulator portion of the rectifier / regulator that produces all the heat. That's why the SCR sits in a heat sink. They will get hot.

My rectifier got so hot that it failed on my 02 r6 and it melted the connector. Not a fun situation to be in when it finally goes out, bike was turning on and off the entire ride home and battery died within min obviously. I guess its a common problem on the 99-02 r6's.
