Help speedo no work

Guys help me out maybe someone has seen this before. My speedo works intermittently comes up works and then doesnt sits on Zero I have cleaned the pickup I think the one on the outside of the sprocket cover? Anyway you think its a sensor?

Either the sensor or the speedo? I'd try taking a friends speedo and plug it into your bike for a speedo check. If that doesn't work, swap the sensors and give that a try? I'd guess it's one or the other?

take the speedo out and see if things work normal then check the connections, if you have access to another speedo then what Tufbusa said is a great way to test things out.

have any aftermarket mods been done to it?

first, take the cover off and have a look inside. see if the speed sensor nut is ok. any obvious problems.

next I would make sure the wire isn't worn thru at some point.

Check the bolt inside the cover,also the connection on the back of the cluster.

Thanks guys I got alottle ahead of myself and didnt check the basics yet I was just hoping this was a common thing and that the problem was the sensor. I will check the wiring etc and pull the sprocket cover to check in there. It comes on and works for a while then starts bouncing and falls back to 0 again.
