In order to use the gauge you must remove the spring. Using TwoBrothersBusa's method you don't remove the spring and you measure the proper amount of oil going back into the fork.

Correct. But I'm going to use the tool to make sure the levels are even. Just following TBB's write-up as-is, I've been pretty happy with the work I did. I saved a bundle based on what the shop quoted me before I laughed and bought the seals/oil.
