You just never know who your neighbors are sometimes....

Growing up I had a neighbor who was in Sicily, Italy and hit the beaches at Normandy then fought all the way into Holland until the war ended.

To me he was just a grumpy old guy who my dad made me cut his grass and do odd jobs for him....it wasn't until I was going into the military myself that he (the old guy) told me about himself....

As a kid my parents had a neighbour who gave me my first job. He was very well spoken and very wealthy (owned factories and multiple large manor houses) but always very calm and well mannered. I knew he had done his time in the military but it was never mentioned.

I later found out when he passed away he was quite highly ranked and was a prisoner who was captured by the Japanese and very badly treated, partly due to his rank and the dishonour of surrendering to save his men from guaranteed slaughter in battle. By all accounts he’d been through Hell, but he was a perfect gentleman to everyone he met with never a clue to what he’d been through.

As you say… you just never know.
