I am getting ready to make a long trip and I need some help with communications. It will just be me on the bike so I am not concerned with passeger com nor telephone although it may be nice to have the ability to add that in the future.

I will have a GPS (either Garmin Zumo 550 or 665) and an Escort Passport X50 radar detector. I don't want to be tethered to the bike so I am looking for a system that will wirelessly let me hear both in my helmet. Seems pretty straight forward but I have no experience at all in this area. Both the GPS and radar detector will be powered from the bike.

I appreaciate any input/experience you may have.

Lots of good information here, we have tried just about everything on the market. The system I use is a throat mic and standard midland 2 pin GRMS radio, but I am tethered. Others will chime in soon.

I've got a set of Sena SMH10's on the way. I chose these because of the large dial control on the side. Most other units like the G4 have multiple buttons that I don't want to fumble with. It received good reviews. Check out the review on webbikeworld.com.

ive used nearly all of them. Features, vs, adaptability vs cost vs usage.
I hated being teathered too. I had the chatterbox units. Sound is great but large bulky units. I considered what else would I use it for. In my case my signifacant other rides too, so it mattered more on the communication side. For cost vs features. The scala rider G4 units are nice. You can Bluetooth connect your gps if it has bluetooth, also same for the phone and mp3 player. You can plug in an mp3 player and not be teathered to anything but your pocket. The only down fall to this unit is if you plug in the mp3 player it affects how the bike to bike features work. Kinda sucks but if your not using that part much all the bluetooth stuff is automatic.

Which ever unit you decide on if you wear a full face helmet get a nylon "NOJ quietrider". Its a piece of nylon that fits on the bottom of your helmet. It removes so much wind noise that it's a whole new world for listening and talking on the phone.

The autocom's are very nice, but the last unit I used took alot of wiring and installation was pretty involved. The newer units might be bluetooth.

Chatterbox units with the NOJ work very well. Scala rider the G4 works very well and can be updated via usb and online updates. Both are easy to opperate. scala is just smaller. which ever you get, grab some popsicle sticks, they are helpful for pushing the wires into the helmet gaps.

Good luck, and let us know.

Scala rider teamset os what i use. It sais i can blue tooth up to 8 things and the sound it great for me. Hope this helps

Thanks for the responses. I'll start checking these out for the basic usage I need.

According to one of the comments in the review you linked to, the 3.5mm has priority over bluetooth. Here is the response he got from Sena.

"Thank you for your interest in SMH10. 3.5 mm audio input has higher priority than Bluetooth Audio (we had a mistake in the manual that is now corrected). So when you have an audio device plugged into the 3.5mm jack, your Bluetooth Audio stream is blocked (it doesn't matter any audio device is connected at the other end of the cable or not). So, if you want to hear Bluetooth Audio, you have to pull out the audio cable from the 3.5 mm jack of the SMH10. However, mobile phone still has highest priority. It means that when you are using mobile phone, you cannot hear the audio signal of the radar detector through the 3.5 mm plug. The priority is mobile phone - intercom - 3.5 mm audio plug - Bluetooth audio."

The effect of that is if anything is plugged into the 3.5MM (ie my radar detector) bluetooth is blocked even if no signal is going into the 3.5MM. That won't work for me because the GPS (which also has MP3) is bluetooth.

The 800 number you listed is not for Tulsa Truck Center.

I left a message for Keith at the other number.

From what I understand, with Autocom the headset is still wired to the com unit so you are still tethered. The upside is you don't have the charge the headset each night. I found a local Autocom dealer who is trying to get my questions answered. It would be nice if Autocom had a US website as product names and such are slightly different.

Thanks.

Any chance you have used both a GPS and radar detector with your Scala? The reviews I have seen never deal with the radar detector and are mostly focused on phone and intercom.
