Getting Rid of Cat

Just wondering,,, has anybody cut out the Cats on the Gen II and welded in straight pipes to bridge the gap?? If you have how does it sound and did it free up any HP.. I am thinking about doing it.. I like the Idea of having a stock looking bike/exhaust but having after market performance..
