How the H-E-double-hockey-sticks do you get the lightning to come out so good? I have a Sony HX1, what's the secret setting?

I'm not sure how the cap does it but a lot of people use a lightning sensor such as:

Capture the Lightning Landscape with the Lightning Trigger!

There are many pre-made options out there though and I know nothing of that one.

You can also make your own:

Lightning Activated Camera Shutter Trigger

From what I understand they work really well with most DSLR cameras. If I ever move back to a place where there is lightning I would get one for sure!
