so I have a bay window, two outside pieces crank open, center 5'x5' glass is solid, about a yr ago I noticed some moisture in between 2ply window, well it got to the point i couldnt stand to look at it anymore and called to get a few estimates to fix/change it out.

first guy shows up yesterday at 9am,says gotta replace entire window $3500!!! wanted to throw up at this point but tell him thanks and Ill get back to you

2nd guy comes 11am, he says gotta replace the entire window $3300!! damn, does it reall cost this much, tell him thanks will let you know

have one more guy coming out later in the day,at this point I already come to accept its gonna cost what it cost.

so the other guy comes out around 5:30 pm,drives 65mi to give me estimate.older guy, very knowledgeable. I dont tell him my other 2 estimates, so he asks,do you want the entire window replaced or just the glass??? now,the other two guys told me there was no way to replace the glass,I asked,if you can replace the glass then yeah, thats all i need,he says no problem...$250:thumbsup:

I was so happy he was honest about it and didnt try and screw me,I also paid him to change out some patio doors i was thinking of replaceing...total for everything $1500

theres still hope out there for honest ppl, just gotta sift through the crooks first

When i come across good ppl like this, I always give em a little bit extra$$ they dont forget it, and will be there for you the next time!

You did the right thing. Often people will just go on the word of one person and then they find out after the fact they could have saved money. People now adays are just greedy and will try to get it any way that they can.

I wonder how much the window cost and how much were the other guys charging for labor????

The other two probably don't want to take the job so they estimated their way out of it. Maybe too small of a job for them or just not interested.

the window cost between $1200-$1500 new depending on material.so they jacked the price up pretty good for labor.

I agree, good,HONEST,contractors, ppl in general are hard to come by and I always keep them in the roladex for when someone asks for a carpenter,plumber..etc.im happy to fwd their info.

Im a high voltage lead cable splicer by trade (past 19yrs) Im pretty mechanically inclined and have no problem doing work myself but I always like to hire an "expert" to do it if I can swing it,this way I know its done right, like anything else, theres "tricks" to every trade.

Way to go on the savings! You will probably serve as word of mouth for the honest man's services.

Capitalism at its best my friend. Make as much money as you can no matter who it hurts.

The Scam Artists and Scum bags prey on the ignorant and those they perceive as easy targets. Simple as that... always have, always will.

Geography plays a role as well. Some parts of the Nation are thick with scumbags other parts not so much. Back east it tends to be pretty thick mostly because of sheer numbers, and especially now with the economy hitting folks so hard in that NE region.

When times are tough it often brings out the worst in folks that aren't clever, hard working, or smart enough to continue making a living when there isn't an overabundance.

You gotta hunt and peck to find those folks who are doing a good honest business. Well Done.

In most industries "CHEAP" generally indicates more than just a low price. ???

So true, might mean unlicensed, uninsured and non union.

Getting a free estimate and declining it is not ripping anybody off.

Not seeing how that is a scam.

Paying $3000 + and finding out later you paid too much is buyers remorse and your fault for not doing your homework.

A scam is collecting part of the money upfront and never coming back.

I totally feel you on this. I had a bad carborator in my jeep a while ago, and was told by the dealer (that I always went to) that it could not be rebuilt, it had to be replaced, and it would cost $950.00. Well I didn't have the money for it then. So I took it back to the same place, and told them to just fix it. Go to pay for it, and the same guy says "okay, your total is $240.00". Instead of me just saying okay here you go, see yah, I ask why so cheap, I thought I needed a new carborator. He says "no we just fixed the one you had, who told you that you would need a new one" ? :firing:
