Best reason I can think of is that you get on the bike from the left side, so makes it easier without a muffler there.

Well stock does have one on the left...and right so through deduction I'd have to say it could be on the left. There isn't enough (stuff) on the right side except for the brake. I would have to say it's ascetically helpful in filling the void. Bike would look lopsided on the left after clearing the drive line stuff.

YES...more HP.... plus less weight... more MPH. Just get a good one.
