When will it end?

Insurance giant paying out $165 million in bonusesMarch 14, 2009 9:47 PM EDT
WASHINGTON - American International Group is giving its executives tens of millions of dollars in new bonuses even though it received a taxpayer bailout of more than $170 billion dollars.

AIG is paying out the executive bonuses to meet a Sunday deadline, but the troubled insurance giant has agreed to administration requests to restrain future payments.

The Treasury Department determined that the government did not have the legal authority to block the current payments by the company. AIG declared earlier this month that it had suffered a loss of $61.7 billion for the fourth quarter of last year, the largest corporate loss in history.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has asked that the company scale back future bonus payments where legally possible, an administration official said Saturday.

This official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, said that Geithner had called AIG Chairman Edward Liddy on Wednesday to demand that Liddy renegotiate AIG's current bonus structure.

Geithner termed the current bonus structure unacceptable in view of the billions of dollars of taxpayer support the company is receiving, this official said.

In a letter to Geithner dated Saturday, Liddy informed Treasury that outside lawyers had informed the company that AIG had contractual obligations to make the bonus payments and could face lawsuits if it did not do so.

Liddy said in his letter that "quite frankly, AIG's hands are tied" although he said that in light of the company's current situation he found it "distasteful and difficult" to recommend going forward with the payments.

Liddy said the company had entered into the bonus agreements in early 2008 before AIG got into severe financial straits and was forced to obtain a government bailout last fall.

The large bulk of the payments at issue cover AIG Financial Products, the unit of the company that sold credit default swaps, the risky contracts that caused massive losses for the insurer.

A white paper prepared by the company says that AIG is contractually obligated to pay a total of about $165 million of previously awarded "retention pay" to employees in this unit by Sunday, March 15. The document says that another $55 million in retention pay has already been distributed to about 400 AIG Financial Products employees.

The company says in the paper it will work to reduce the amounts paid for 2009 and believes it can trim those payments by at least 30 percent.

Bonus programs at financial companies have come under harsh scrutiny after the government began loaning them billions of dollars to keep the institutions afloat. AIG is the largest recipient of government support in the current financial crisis.

AIG also pledged to Geithner that it would also restructure $9.6 million in bonuses scheduled to go a group that covers the top 50 executives. Liddy and six other executives have agreed to forgo bonuses.

The group of top executives getting bonuses will receive half of the $9.6 million now, with the average payment around $112,000.

This group will get another 25 percent on July 14 and the final 25 percent on September 15. But these payments will be contingent on the AIG board determining that the company is meeting the goals the government has set for dealing with the company's financial troubles.

The Obama administration has vowed to put in place reforms in the $700 billion financial rescue program in an effort to deal with growing public anger over how the program was operated during the Bush administration.

That anger has focused in part on payouts of millions of dollars in bonuses by financial firms getting taxpayer support.

In his letter, Liddy told Geithner, "We believe there will be considerably greater flexibility to reduce contractual payments in respect of 2009 and AIG intends to use its best efforts to do so."

But he also told Geithner that he felt it could be harmful to the company if the government continued to press for reductions in executive compensation.

"We cannot attract and retain the best and brightest talent to lead and staff the AIG businesses, which are now being operated principally on behalf of the American taxpayers - if employees believe their compensation is subject to continued and arbitrary adjustment by the U.S. Treasury," Liddy said.

That "brigthest and best talent" BS...I am so tired of hearing that...your company is 61.7 BILLION DOLLARS IN THE TOILET
How brightest and best talent can they friggin' be...

Ya got to realize that all those Government Employees (Cabinet Members, Senators and Congressional Financial Committee Members) who make these HARD  payout decisions came from and are going back too the Companies who they gave the MONEY too ! Kinda like Wolves telling Wolves to guard and NOT eat the chickens  . These guys don't see Tax money as ours :rulez:(Taxpayers) mainly because they evidently don't pay taxes themselves) , it's just ANOTHER Financial Resource that they can use for THEIR own personal advancement and enrichment ! And that INCLUDES our New Pres also. And that my friend is a very sad State of Affairs our Country is in :beerchug:

Someday the government will pass a law that stockholders set the pay of officers instead of the board of directors.

I wouldnt count on that, street racer. They're getting WAY too many kickbacks off of it to do anything about it.

Can someone say........................ "REVOLUTION"!!! It's time to abolish that which controls us!!! :)

It's not the fact that they "control" us. We need laws, but we need people with common sense who will enforce those laws. Don't be suprised 5 - 10 years down the road if you don't start hearing about how some of the senators and Represenatives are getting kick backs from the bail out money too. That is just my own theory, nothing I have heard, but knowing the nature of the beast you know it is going to happen.

If I had any thing to do with AIG, I would be pulling out and taking my business else where. :moon:

I would love to see President Obama stand up and say AIG you are a blight on society, you have 30 days to pay back ALL of the bail out money you have recieved in 2008 and 2009. You will not be allowed to recieve anymore bail out money ever. :please: :please: :please:

If your not registered to vote, I suggest you do so now. If your not happy with your Senators and Represenatives, you will know what to do.

One day our military will be taking over the control of this country when the people finally figure out that their complacency has allowed the lowest dregs of our society (out of work lawyers) to run a country and dictate how everything should be done when they themselves are unable to even run their own lives with any moral standard even remotely acceptable by most...

With approval ratings into the single digits, how much longer do we leave these scumbags in office?

They are so deeply entrenched that any single replacement wont last.... it will take a wholesale house cleaning to even start to address the problem..

Look what happened to the USSR from the same corruption we have here... the people finally said "enough" maybe not any better now but they revolted and that was the end of that.. We are not that far from that.. (although many may deny it :) )

I seriously believe that Obama and company feel that if people are completely reliant on the government.. they are less likely to complain and revolt against the absolute mess that "is" DC... "Change" is in the air alright...

The bailout money is a joke, I doubt one cent helped anyone keep there home. It was an excuse to give thew rich more money...

We're a long ways from a revolt. Most of us like our houses, jobs, motorcycles, etc... To revolt would mean all of that is ended, you start from scratch. There is no easy revolt, it would be nasty.... And it would be meaningless anyway. The Rich would stay Rich, bet on it.

97% of all the private jobs in this country are created by small business! 100% of the stimulus money has been given to the top 1% of big business. Each and every company who has recieved this stimulus money has donated heavily to the democrates and especially heavily to Obama's presidential campaign. Well, except for the bank in Barney Frank's home state of Connecticut who received $12m. When Barney was ask why his bank received special treatment, his reply was, "We cannot let a bank fail that's owned by a black man"! I'm not dreaming this sheetz up! And by the way, this bank owner's company car is a $75K Porche.

Most of us have no clue as to how much money a trillion dollars really is? If laid end to end in one dollar bills they would circle the earth 3,508 times.

Each and every one of us have co-signed the loan agreement with China guaranteeing the loan. You and I will be paying on this loan for the rest of our lives and the lives of our children. Will spending all this money help you in any way? You decide! :beerchug:

Oh, one more thing. Whatever you think of this "Spead the wealth" theory, keep it in mind on the next ellection day! It's your only way of controling washington!

I'd like to see something where the public has to give a vote of confidence
for them to keep office. To vote for a Senator once every six years then
they're in to just do whatever they want is just sick.
We should be able to fire them...now.

The other problem with our system, is if you wanted to be come Senator or
President...you better already have a boatload of cash to start with.
That puts public office out of the reach of most of us and limits the pool
to the already rich. I know it's not impossible for a person of limited wealth
to get elected but it's much easier for the megarich...and of course they will
stay rich that way.

Which narrows your choice between moron A or idiot B. How MANY times do
we not like either canidate and pick the lesser of two evils?

I'd like to see congress's pay bet directly influenced by it's approval rating.
And if it drops below a certain number...they are out. And that pay for life thing...adios.
So they better LISTEN to their constituits.

If 80% of Americans were against the ramitupourass package and they vote
for it anyway...they should all be fired NOW. 2 billion to acorn...OMG :banghead:

I always find it intriguing how America is lauded by us to be the greatest country on earth, a shining beacon of freedom, God's chosen ones, an example for the rest of the world...

yet our second largest foreign creditor is a communist nation.

Well as i sit and watch my 401k evaporate and the cost of everything go up and the value of our dollar continue to weaken, I'm wondering if there is any reason to stay here.

I've certainly considered it. The best years of this country are certainly
BEHIND us. We're going in the toilet with a President and Congress with
their hands on the flusher.

The truth of the matter (not crying over spilled milk) but McCain bled
red, white, and blue and whether you agreed with all his policies or not
he would have had America's best interest at heart with every fiber of his being.

My knock against Obama is you just don't know, IMHO he has an agenda
some of which he boldly says bording socialism (and people voted for him
anyway :banghead:) and another parallel agenda he kepts private.

I beleive Obama's goal is to make people more dependent on Government
(and less on God). He wants everyone to believe only Govt' can save us
from the crisis (much of which is perpetuated by Govt'). Once we buy into the
"do anything you want but save us" mantra...he then has it all.

In reality as long as I have a decent job (which can change tomorrow, literally)
and a home (which I'm planning to sell eventually, if I don't lose it first)
then I'll stay, bird in the hand thing. Should the home and job thing change and
I get a little cash stash from selling the home...then I have a very real decision
to make.

I used to love being an American...now I'm a little ashamed. Don't really want
to part of the Socialist Francepublic of Meximerica. I don't think it has a future
anyway. Many of the policies have been tried BEFORE and THEY DON"T WORK.

When new people are voted in they just become part of the problem. In these times just what a person has to do to become president proves that they should not be and don't deserve to be president.
People think the governments job is to keep us safe and secure and spare us all pain. The govs job is to do all they can to keep us free. A bird in a cage is safe but it is not free.
