visual alert "ADD ON" for radar detectors

that's the sh@t! if that don't alert you than nothing will. i might consider it in my near future. thanks ice

i want to find something that will confuse there radar gun, Something that amits the same fequency as theres. I "think" a motion detector does this but havent ever researched

You need whats called a "radar jammer". These exist and are very illegal in most if not all states. I also believe they are harder to acquire from what I've read.

Basically, upon being painted with radar it detects the band and frequency. Then it emits a burst of the same radar signal, throwing obnoxiously low/high values, back at the gun. Currently laser cannot be defeated this way, due to it's direct line of sight properties.

Be warned, I've heard of officers in a few states pulling people over becuase of "probable cause". Citing the jamming effect they witnessed as that "cause". I believe the cases where the officer confiscated the jamming device all held up in court. To top it off, I heard that it's a pretty serious offense. So if you do get one and get pulled over anyway... smash that thing and sprinkle it.

My feeling, is that my radar detector should be illegal as it only has the task of lowering my risks regarding my heavy hand/lead foot... but because it's not, I run one. If I can't beat them legally then I deserve the ticket. If I don't like that, I shouldn't speed.

I have a jammer from Radar Roy that I took off my busa before I sold it. I would part ways with it very reasonable if you are interested?

I forgot where I found this, but this is exactly the same device you can build yourself for less then $10.

Chris, I built one using these parts and it works great plus you can use the volume control to dim the LED's at night.

http://www.hammondmfg.com/dwg9.htm

I used the 1551GBK plastic enclosure or you can use a bigger size box which I placed 4 1.7v 3000mcd LED's from RadioShack part number 276-307.
Make sure when wiring up you get the polarity right, I had a coiled cord lying around with a 3.5mm plug on it so I used that.

After I soldered everything up in the box used some black silicone to fill the gaps in.
Glued a piece of black plastic on the cover to get the angle that I wanted, added some velcroe to the box and the screen on the bike and that was all to it.

I wired the LED's parallel and did not use any resistors as I did not know what voltage comes through the earjack outlet on the Escort.

Regarding polarity the longer leg on the LED's is positive and the centre tip of the plug is postive, if you wire up the LED's polarity wrong to the plug the unit will not work.

Had a chance to compare my unit against a VA and they both light up at the same time and the VA looked a bit brighter but my unit is bright enough and adding a resistor you could increase the brightness if so desired but mine works great, the angle of the LED,s to your eyes is important as the viewing angle of the LED's is only 12 degrees.

During the day have volume control of the Escort up to max and night time adjust the volume control to dim the LED's otherwise you will be blinded [/QUOTE]

2 fast signal diodes in a half bridge would probably smooth out the tone, then measure the max voltage at full volume, add enough led’s in series to get the voltage drop (or add in the appropriate resistor) and then you can use the volume control as a dimmer for night. Only a few bucks.

However, some times it’s nice to spend the extra $$$$ to get a neat pre assembled unit.

My detector is mounted under the nose and I spliced 2 LED's into the light display circuit inside the detector and mounted them in that little space just under the windscreen. I have a chrome windscreen and the LED's reflect off of the windscreen real nice in the dark. During the day I trust my 1000 yard stare and ability to read traffic over any detetctor. It is primarily for me to use in the dark. I can still see it in the daytime but at night it jumps out real nice, kinda lights up the bottom half of the windscreen.

Of course it's worthless without photos and a how too DUDE!.

Although it reminds me back in 88 I installed a remote radar detector with the sensor under the hood behind the grill and a remote "head" in side. I removed the LED's and mounted them flush INSIDE the instrument cluster side by side and mounted the speaker in the left drivers door pilar. I tried to make little holes that look like crap for the speaker to emit thru but the LEDs behind the glass with the speedo was cool to me.
